JaKo, Inc. seeks summer intern

Term:  April to October 2007, with the possibility of extending up to one year.

Job description
Intern will:

  • Learn techniques for grass management
  • Learn the fundamentals of  grass-based dairying, including rotational grazing, calf-raising, animal health and behavior, and animal handling techniques
  • Assist with milking cows and processing of milk, including production of butter, ice cream, cottage cheese, and yogurt
  • Develop skills in raising pigs and lambs on pasture
  • Learn techniques for raising poultry from brooder house to grass
  • Learn all aspects of poultry processing
  • Learn all aspects of finishing beef on grass
  • Assist with manufacturing of fencing supplies
  • Assist in construction of necessary equipment for production
  • Learn techniques for running a on-farm store
  • Participate in brainstorming for creative methods of production and marketing

Additional options may include:

  • Gardening for production
  • Baking for production
  • Database creation/maintenance

Intern requirements: Intern must be physically fit and able to participate in a wide range of physically exerting tasks.  Intern must be able to think creatively and use common sense.  Must have good relational skills, interest in relating to customers, and a desire to learn.

Room and board provided, plus small stipend.  Alcohol, tobacco, and drugs prohibited.
