Apple trees in full bloom
When I went to the orchard this week to check on the calves we have grazing there, I peeked at the trees.  They were in full bloom and very pretty with lots of potential for a big apple crop.  I know they say to never count your apples before they are picked, but it is fun to dream of picking 500-700 bushels this fall.

Wild edible plant specialist
Are you or someone you know knowledgeable in wild edible plants? We think this might be an interesting topic for the spring party.

Buckets
Mark is in need of 3-5 gallon clean buckets with lids to use for glaze storage.  If you have any that are unwanted, drop them off in the sales room.  Thanks.

Stories from the farm
Kendra and Mark had a friend from British Colombia spend the last two weeks with them at the Inn and here on the farm.  She helped plant strawberries, make pottery, make cheese and butter, bake bread and many other things.  One day we had to help a heifer give birth and Rachel got to witness the event.  As soon as the calf was doing okay, we all left and went back to work.  But Rachel just stood there watching in awe.

Another day at lunch, she looked at her plate in amazement as she realized that everything on her plate was grown or made on the farm.  The lettuce had just been picked from the garden, the bread was fresh from our ovens, the cheese was made in the barn, the summer sausage came from our cows and the apple sauce from the orchard.  She was amazed at how we live and the simplicity of life here.

Strawberry plants a big hit
The strawberry plants went fast!  May all of you who picked some up have success in your plantings.

More babies
One day this week Daniel found baby kittens.  We knew that Snowflake had birthed a litter, but she was keeping the nest a secret.  So we add them to our list of babies along with chicks, calves, lambs and all the garden produce.

Butter and cheese
We are now getting enough milk to start making butter and cheese.  The first batches of cheese will be devoted to hot red pepper and Italian jack.  Keep watching the cooler for new additions.

Spring party
May 31... don't forget!

Stories from the farm
Baby lambs are incredibly interesting and fun to watch.  One evening there was a group of them (about half black, half white) that were just standing there jumping straight up.  It looked like popcorn.  Another evening there was a big group of them just running back and forth across the pasture.  Oh, and about the sheep guard dog-- when we turned her out with the sheep she took off and we haven't seen her since.  We are still hoping she shows up.

Fresh dairy products
Wow, how delicious fresh products are!  The vanilla yogurt is delectable and fresh whipped cream on fruit is hard to beat.  Enjoy!

Garden garnishes
The garden really started to spring forth this week.  Spinach, lettuce and sugar peas growing like "weeds"
, strawberries putting on new leaves and the fruit trees blooming.  Ah, spring...

Suggestions for spring party?
The last several years at our party we have had classes on cooking, gardening, bread making, etc.  If you have suggestions or requests for this year we would be happy to hear about them.  The spring party will be Memorial Day, May 31.

Cows With Names Give More Milk from Allan Nation
Catherine Douglas and Peter Rowlinson of Newcastle University in the United Kingdom have won a veterinary medicine prize for showing that giving dairy cows names and calling them by their correct name increased milk production yield by an average of 258 liters a year. The researchers said cows are very responsive to friendly milkers with a positive attitude.

Thanks for your help in making this happen.

Stories from the farm
This week has seen baby lambs popping out every day.  As a way of keeping the predators from having lamb chops before we do, we have been penning the flock up at night in electrified netting.  This is just part of life for us, but several nights this week we have had guests who think it is a real pleasure to watch the baby lambs run and play.  Hopefully we will get our guard dog this next week.  But sadly we will then loose the incentive to go and watch the lambs antics.

Baby calves and milk
Thanks for all your name suggestions.  They have come in handy since we had nine fresh cows this week.  That means by Monday we will have fresh milk in the sales room and soon thereafter yogurt and fresh cream.

Pet food made from beef
This week we had a cow that was paralyzed during delivery and was never able to get back up.  On Saturday, we butchered the cow and ground the meat for pet food.  You will find 2 lb bags of whole beef pet food in the sales room.

April challenge!
Kendra-- During the month of April, I am challenging myself to not eat any white flour or sugar.  I'm doing this for three reasons:  1) to make myself aware of how much I normally eat, 2) to experiment with healthy sugar substitutes, and 3) to see how much better I feel!  It's going great so far and I've discovered that a good way to satiate a sweet tooth is a piece of 100% whole wheat toast with butter and honey.  If you'd like to join the challenge or have some encouraging words, let me know!

Judy helping us full time
Ken-- Friday was Judy's last day to work full time at the church.  She will be greatly missed there, but we are glad to have her at home!  She has agreed to work part time at the church until they can replace her.  I personally think it will take a multitude of people to do what she was doing.  She is a very talented lady.

Stories from the farm
Ken-- When I was a child we had more jackrabbits running around than you could count and the challenge was to see how far down the road you could run them since they usually ran straight ahead and didn't dart like a cottontail.  After college when we moved back to the farm, there were no jackrabbits.  The theory was that they got a disease and all died.  This winter there have been two around here, a pair, so who knows how many we will have next year.  Oh yes, they still run in a straight line.

Happy Easter to all!
