Spring party

I hope that you are getting excited about our spring party on Memorial Day, May 31st.   We definitely are.  We have some new products to introduce to you that we know you will love!  Plan on spending the day here on the farm eating, playing, observing, climbing, learning, and more.

Only for the brave
As you know, we are out of yogurt.  So as an experiment, we tried making more yogurt out of extra colostrum we had in the freezer.
We tried it yesterday and...well... it sure is interesting.  We're going to put some in the sales room beside the kefir.  If you are feeling brave, take some and try it.  Some of our experiments work, some of them don't.  Let us know which you think this was...

Clarification on Chickens
Last week we announced that we had just purchased broiler chickens.  In response, someone asked where we get our chickens from and how they were raised.  We appreciate the question and apologize for not being clear enough.

We purchase chicks from a company that ships them to us as soon as they hatch.  We then grow them ourselves, controlling all feed and then butchering them here on the farm.

Stories from the farm
I (Ken) was out choring one morning this week when it dawned on me that there were no birds around and that I hadn't seen any for a couple of days.  I started looking for other wildlife and found very little evidence that there was much activity.  I had realized that the winter was hard on the cows but hadn't thought much about the wildlife.  Did they all fly south or hibernate?  Or
will there be that much death loss?  I guess we will know later this spring.  Latter in the day I noticed a big flock of geese flying high in perfect formation heading north.  Nature is vibrant.

Order sides of beef early for a discount

There is only one week left to order a side of beef at a discount.  As a reminder, we will give you a five cents per pound discount for a $100 deposit, a ten cent discount for a $200 deposit, a fifteen cent discount for a $300 deposit or a twenty cent discount for a $400 deposit.  All orders must be in by March 1, 2010 to take advantage of this offer.

Freezer emptying out
During our growing and production season, we work so hard to fill up our big walk-in freezer.  Now that we are nearing the end of winter, when I walk into the freezer it seems so empty.  We want it to empty out so we have room for new products this spring but it still takes me by surprise.

Items that we are getting low on or are out of are: chicken, applesauce,
1/2 gallon frozen milk, beef stew meat, ox tail and flavored cheeses.

Chickens ordered
Last week we ordered broiler chickens.  The first batch arrives on March 23 and we plan on butchering them on May 24.  We know that some of you are getting anxious for fresh chicken!

Stories from the farm
This week I (Ken) had the opportunity to attend a stockmanship class in Oklahoma.  I was exposed to some new ideas that I will have to think about a bit.  The best part was that when I came home a fellow grass-based dairyman came along to get our old butter churn.  He is just getting into retailing and we are delighted to help him get started.  We have been blessed by others upgrading their equipment and giving us good deals and are happy to do the same.

Order sides of beef early for a discount

In the past we have given a discount if you ordered your side of beef early.  This year we are doing that again, but have decided to let you determine how big of discount you would like based on the size of your deposit.  If you place an order, we will give you a five cents per pound discount for a $100 deposit, a ten cent discount for a $200 deposit, a fifteen cent discount for a $300 deposit or a twenty cent discount for a $400 deposit.  This will help us generate some early season money to meet our early financial commitments.  All orders must be in by March 1, 2010 to take advantage of this offer.

For those of you who have already ordered, please feel free to take advantage of this offer.

Bread
We have had rave reviews of the Honey Whole Wheat bread that Kendra has been making.  This week, she changed from a loaf pan size to an artisan round-loaf shape.  This works much better with our baking and dough freezing capabilities.

Honey Whole Wheat bread is made from 100% fresh-ground whole wheat flour and is extremely healthy.  It can be found above the whole chickens in the stainless steel freezers.

Stories from the farm
Many of you have taken advantage of the customer discount at the Sunflower Inn.  It seems like a stop at the farm always follows a stay at the Inn, and everyone we have talked to has really enjoyed the relaxing getaway.  Kendra and Mark have also appreciated getting to know our customers better.  Remember that March 15 is the last day to take advantage of this offer!

Anyone interested in rabbit?

Last week we had a request for dressed rabbit.  Is there interest from others of you for rabbit fryers? Please let us know if this has wider interest.

Ground beef
We have discovered some ground beef that has much more fat in it than normal.  This was a mixing error and not intentional.  The beef will still taste the same, you will just have to drain off the extra grease.  If you get some of this and want it replaced, let us know; however but we have no way of identifying the packages.

Pottery happenings
This week Mark completed the first run of items.  On Tuesday night he listed a bunch of it on Etsy.  By Wednesday morning he had sold three mugs.  He was very happy.

Mark would take any extra packing peanuts and small boxes (approximate size of a mug) that anyone wants to clean out of their garage.  Please flatten the boxes.

Stories from the farm
This weekend the family was all together.  We celebrated my (Ken) birthday, had a Super Bowl party and spent an afternoon doing goal-setting and brainstorming.  A lot of good ideas were passed around and many rabbit trails traversed.  It is very hard to keep this group on target.  Maybe that is why we do so much dreaming and brainstorming.
