Product supply/demand

Thanks to you, our sales for this January are up over last January.  This means we can spend more time researching and perfecting new and different products for you to enjoy.

As usual, demand for different products changes from year to year and it is difficult to predict how much of each item we will need.  We are currently sold out of yogurt, but expect to have enough frozen milk to supply the need until we start milking.  The layer chickens cannot keep up with the demand for eggs, but we have more chickens coming up in late spring. Thanks for your patience while we try and meet demand.

Oprah agrees
This past Wednesday, Oprah's segment featured Michael Pollan talking about Food 101. Pollan focused on eating healthy and the benefits of grass-fed meat and milk.  Did you know that you were far ahead of most people?  You can be a real witness to your friends and neighbors about how you are living a healthier lifestyle.

Family brainstorming session and new products
Next weekend David and Haly will be home so as a family, we will spend some time brainstorming new products.  We are trying to expand our operation to employ more family members.  If you have any suggestions please let us know!

Stories from the farm
Ken:  Suddenly the other day, egg production dropped by about 15%
.  I wondered why and tried to think if it was predators or if it was a one day change and maybe I just gathered the eggs earlier that day.  But the lower production has continued.  Friday, it dawned on me that about two weeks earlier, we had our last really cold spell.  It takes about two weeks for a chicken to develop an egg.  It only made sense then.

The truth about sugar

Ken:  I was informed about a very informative lecture on the dangers of sugar this week and wanted to pass it on to you.  It is rather long but well worth the time it takes to watch it.

Remodeling and recycling
There have been big changes in the sales room this week!  We have opened it up to give you more room to shop, plus now Mark can interact with customers as he works on pottery.  We think you'll really like the changes.

We have also added tubs for reusing plastic bags, egg cartons, and glass containers (wine bottles, quart and pint jars).  These are located under the center table.

It was a happy birthday
Judy:  Thank you to everyone for the wonderful birthday wishes!  It's humbling and heart-warming to realize how many friends we have.

We've set the date for the annual farm party!
Mark your calendars-- Memorial Day, May 31, is our annual spring party on the farm.  Reasons to attend the farm party:
--food
--baby chicks, lambs, and calves
--classes taught by customers
--watch a potter
--climb the silo
--a great day on the farm!

Stories from the farm
Ken:  I was at a grazing conference yesterday and was reminded how far from normal our operation is.  Not only are very few bovine producers all grass and calve when the wild animals give birth, most have a very labor intensive operation that requires lots of inputs.  Only a few other producers were retailing any of their production as most were just selling a commodity product.
Thanks for helping us be different and supporting us.

Pottery studio operational

Mark put the finishing touches on his studio this week and is up and running.  Be sure and check it out when you come to the store.  His new web site is www.markhorstpottery.com  If you are needing a special piece or are looking for an unusual gift for personal or corporate needs talk to him.  He can put your name or logo on any piece.

Apple cider vinegar
We bottled vinegar this week and have it available in the sales room in either plastic or glass.  It has a nice light taste and I think you will enjoy it.

Egg yolk color
This week we had scrambled eggs for supper one evening.  We noticed that the yolks were more pale than normal.  We started thinking about it and realized that it takes 2-3 weeks for an egg to develop completely inside a chicken before it is laid.  The last month it has been cold so that there is less green grass.  Because of the cold, the chickens were staying in the house more, eating grain instead of out grazing.  That solved our mystery.  With warmer weather this week the chickens have been out lots more.

Stories from the farm
Ken:  Today Judy is celebrating a birthday.  As a surprise to her I am asking all of you who know her to send a brief note of celebration and encouragement.  Her email is judyk@shmcfamily.org.   Thanks.

Baked items

Kendra:  I have been doing a lot of research on ingredients for baked goods and have decided to use all organic ingredients.  This will take the price up slightly but as you all know (seeing that you are JaKo customers), it's worth paying more for better food.  I hope to have 100% Whole Wheat bread-- made from fresh-ground wheat and sweetened with honey-- available in the sales room by the end of the week.

One added benefit of organic products is that it does not include genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  Check out the tips on the Non-GMO shopping guide.

Is there any interest in gluten-free baked goods?  If any of you have a gluten intolerance, let us know and I'll see what I can do.  If anyone has good gluten-free bread recipes, I'd welcome those too.

Until then, watch for our 100% Whole Wheat bread coming soon!  It's fabulous.

Any comments on dishwasher soap?
Kendra:  We have been having trouble with water spots on our glassware... and aren't sure if it's attributed to the homemade dishwasher soap or not.  For those of you who use it, how is it working for you?

Cold weather activities
Ken:  Wow, what a cold front can make you do.  We spent more time choring and one morning I didn't have water in the barn but thankfully I caught it before any pipes broke.  Construction on the barn remodel (for the pottery studio) came to a screeching halt but in the end Mark was glad because he needed to spend time building a web site for his pottery and the two cold days were good incentive.  Daniel went to a horticulture conference, what a good day for that.

Stories from the farm
Ken:  On Wednesday with the threat of cold weather and lots of wind, I moved the chicken house and stock trailer to the north side of the calves' pen to give them protection from the wind.  Thursday morning when I chored I thought that it was bitterly cold but when I got down to the pen the calves were all laying down in the grass and not anywhere near the wind break that I had set up for them.  Just goes to show that they were more acclimated to the weather than I was.

Exciting changes for the new year

We are happy to have Kendra join JaKo beginning this year.  She will be helping us continue to produce some current products as well as introducing new ones.  She will also be responsible for marketing.

Because of Kendra's addition and some creative brainstorming, we are excited to introduce the following new products for 2010:
  • bread (both fresh baked and frozen dough)
  • cinnamon rolls (fresh baked and frozen dough)
  • frozen cookie dough
  • fresh strawberries
Stay tuned for other exciting things still in the brainstorming stage!

Barn remodel in process
We are also remodeling the barn behind the sales room for Mark's pottery studio.  Mark specializes in functional pottery and hopes to begin production in 2-3 weeks.  Next time you come to the farm, poke your head around the corner and see the progress being made!

Stories from the farm
We have several cats here on the farm to help keep the mouse population in check.  This fall they have taken to sleeping in a heap on the driver's seat of our chore vehicle.  At first
it was a nuisance to throw out several cats before you could sit down.  But as the weather turned cooler and then down right cold it has been very nice.  Now when we go out to chore we sit on a heated seat.  Thank you cats for your many contributions.
