Cheese packaging Last week we acquired a shrink wrap machine in anticipation of chicken butchering next spring. This past week we were experimenting wrapping cheese with it. The cheese in the sales room has been shrink wrapped and we would like your comments on the packaging vs the vacuum seal bags we had been using. Thanks.
Plans for next year We are in the process of looking at several new products that we think you will enjoy. If there is a product you think we should add to the list, let us know and we will check it out.
Helpful neighbors Last week when we were out of town, we had a neighbor chore for us. This week Daniel has been doing the chores for two neighbors who are gone for the holidays. I have been on the phone sharing with many people who want to know what all we are doing and how we are doing it. The Lord has blessed us with network of friends to share with. Stories from the farm This fall, we have been having trouble with a coon getting into the hen house at night. He had figured out how to open the door latch and help himself to a great meal of fresh chicken. He would only come around every couple of days, as a big meal lasts a long time. After much frustration we enlisted the help of a local trapper who brought over a live trap. He caught several possums over a two week period but the coon was evasive. Finally this week, after putting a live chicken in the trap as bait, we caught our coon. He was a big boy or, as the trapper said, a "small bear." The trapper said he would make a fine coonskin cap for himself. The chicken who was bait was in a protected part of the cage and was not hurt, but she probably will lay scrambled eggs for a few days.

Farm Fresh Weekly Christmas greetings A very merry Christmas to you all! We honor Christ Jesus, whose birth we are celebrating, and pray that you are doing the same. Having just laid a brother-in-law to rest last week, we know that not all tears and sorrows have vanished from this world and that some of you are experiencing job loss or other personal hardships. But we also know that no matter what our circumstance, we can still look to Christ for strength and support.
You have supported us this year and for that we are very thankful. We value your friendship and want to offer you a special present. The Sunflower Inn of Yoder is a bed and breakfast which Kendra and Mark (our daughter and son-in-law) are managing. Rooms regularly cost $89.00 per night. If you would like to enjoy the hospitality of a country inn and a great breakfast made from JaKo products, we will subsidize the cost so that it will only cost you $49.00 per room per night. This offer is good from January 1 through March 15, 2010. Call the Inn at 620-465-2200 to make your reservations. Please mention this JaKo offer and they will give you the lower rate along with special treatment.
May you have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Farm Fresh Weekly Top 12 Foods for Healthy Immune Response Dr. Mercola, a leading expert on healthy eating, came out this week with his list of top ten healthy foods. Amazing that out of the top four products, we sell three of them (raw, all grass milk, free-range eggs, and all grass beef or lamb).
New product-- dishwasher soap A customer who liked the laundry detergent recently asked us if we could start making dishwasher soap, so we did. Let us know what you think.
Baby chicks This week we received 200 layer chicks. Who would have known how cold it would be when we ordered several months ago but they came through the mail in flying colors. Almost literally. When I took them out of the box and put them in the brooder they were off exploring and looking for food and water. Interesting to watch. They will start laying in 5-6 months.
Cold weather Wow, I am not a fan but the cattle and chickens seemed to take it in stride. We had about four inches of snow which stayed all week. The layer chickens' feed consumption went up about 20% (they stayed inside more because they hate snow) so even this time of year if they are able to be out they do quite a bit of foraging.
Stories from the farm We had a brother-in-law pass away this week. He was a great guy and had a strong faith in Jesus. He will be missed. Thanks for your prayers.

Farm Fresh Weekly Fresh milk Today was the last day we milked, and we have about 50 gallon of fresh milk to sell, and then it will be gone for the year. We anticipate having enough frozen milk, cream, yogurt and butter to last all winter until we start milking again next spring. I sure enjoy the break from the daily chores; and by the way the cows respond to coming to the barn (very slowly) I know they enjoy the break, too.
Colby cheese Like all products from a grass-fed dairy operation, there is some variance from batch to batch. If you thought the colby cheese we were selling in the sales room was dry, give it another try! The next batch we made and just cut up and packaged for the sales room is much more moist and soft.
Pasture planting Saturday we no-till planted some barley, oats, wheat and vetch seed into pasture that we had grazed down pretty hard this fall. Hopefully it will give us some good grazing next spring. It was nice to borrow a big tractor with automatic steering and no-till drill from the neighbor. All we had to do when we came to the edge of the field was raise the drill and turn around, then hit a button and it steered itself to the other end. Although it was easy, it made me appreciate the pastoral setting of walking my cows home to be milked.
Stories from the farm Tonight I am experiencing the anticipation and waiting that I imagine the Hebrew people did in waiting for the Christ child. Kendra and Mark are flying home tonight from Maui and we will go to Wichita in the morning to pick them up. They will be managing at the Sunflower Inn Bed & Breakfast in Yoder. It is always good to have family around.
