Your health....vaccines?
With all the talk about swine flu and regular flu, will you get vaccinated or will you increase your immune system in other ways?  I have decided to eat more yogurt and kefir and keep a jug of colostrum handy.  I have found that a small amount of colostrum every couple of days works wonders and if I do feel like I am coming down with something a larger swig clears things up.

JaKo parties

Last evening, we attended our first JaKo party.  A customer offered to throw a party featuring our products and invite her friends and neighbors that she had been talking to about us.  We agreed and provided all the products that she wanted to feature.  It was a good way for us to meet potential customers and answer their questions.  If you are interested in doing a party, contact us to work out the details.

Stories from the farm
We, again, have a very clever chicken thief.  This guy (we think it is a coon) has figured out how to open the chicken house door at night, go in and help himself and then leave before dawn.  Sometimes life seems pretty easy but when you keep getting "foxed" out by a coon it is a bit embarrassing.  Then again, maybe we are getting "cooned" out by a fox.

Health by the status quo
We hear about the benefits of sterilizers, bactericides, hand sanitizers, pasteurization, etc. to keep us healthy.  This week, I read an analogy to that which put it into a different perspective.  Trying to get rid of all the bacteria is like spraying your field with Roundup to get rid of all the weeds.  There are always a few weeds who are resistant to Roundup and turn into super weeds.  Likewise, all of our sterilization techniques are causing some bacteria to become resistant and even more harmful.  Why not keep our bodies immersed with beneficial bacteria to hold the harmful ones under control, much like growing a mulch crop in our garden to keep the weeds under control?

Do your pets like lamb?

We have had good response to our pet food made from chicken parts.  In another month we will be butchering lamb.  We can make a pet food from lamb as well.  Let us know if this is something that you would be interested in so we know how to plan.

Stories from the farm
This past week our vacuum sealer quit and when we tried to get parts, discovered that it was an obsolete machine.  Also this week my laser printer quit, my mouse only scrolls down (no other direction), the lawn mower engine blew up and the service man at the garage where I had taken the van told me that the van was getting very tired.  It had been cloudy and rainy all week until Thursday afternoon when the sun came out.  Wow, what a difference that made in my life.  Suddenly all my troubles didn't seem so big anymore.  I had to think how many people I know live all their lives with "cloudy weather."  God has truly blessed me and I am thankful that I have "Sonshine" in my life.

Farm Fresh Weekly

Health by the status quo
Last night I was watching a bit of TV (unusual for me) and there was an advertisement for some drug on.  They spent 10-15 seconds telling about all the terrible side affects that you could have from taking it and what to do about them (get more drugs).  I had to think "why would anyone want to take those when there are many ways to stay healthy without any side affects?"  That is one of the reasons we are so passionate about producing healthy, life-giving food.

Seasonal changes continue
This week we looked at the forecast and decided that it was time to switch to afternoon milking.  I enjoy milking in the morning so the rest of the day is free but do not enjoy cold weather.  So until we stop milking around the first of December we will milk sometime in the afternoon.  If you would like to watch, now is the best time.  Give us a call and we will coordinate dates and times.

Stories from the farm
We lease our ground out to a friend to use for deer hunting.  He is an avid bow hunter and last night about 9 pm the door bell rang.  He had taken a friend along and they stopped in to show me the 10-point buck that his friend had shot.  It was a nice specimen in very good flesh, not a trophy but worthy of talking about.  I guess that we must be producing forage that the deer can thrive on as well as our cattle without all the pharmaceuticals that the industry is pushing.

Healthy food for your pets
With your affirmation we ground chicken parts into pet food this week.  But before we started to package it we decided it needed to go before quality control.  So we gave some to Duke and the farm cats.  They all gave it rave reviews (at least their dishes were licked clean really quickly).  It is for sale in the bottom of the lamb freezer.  But to get a feeling for what your pet thinks we would like to give each of you a tub as a trial.  Get one the next time you are out and let us know the results.

New product-- raw grillers
This week we brought home raw grillers from the butcher.  They are very much like brats, but since they didn't have a label for that we had to call them grillers.  To prevent confusion, the raw grillers are in Styrofoam trays and the cooked grillers are packaged in plastic.

Signs of the season changing
This week the seasonal changes became apparent.  Some of the more obvious ones were the migration of barn swallows, the first frost, helping Judy wash the windows in the house, grass turning brown, Daniel helping a neighbor harvest corn, soybeans and milo, milking in the dark, and not getting all the day's work done before it gets dark again.  Oh well, Daniel would like us to burn more firewood this winter (it is stacked in the chicken house) so he has more room for chickens next year, so maybe it is about time to build a fire and curl up with a book by the fire.

Stories from the farm
From Mark and Kendra in Hawaii:  This week we visited the Surfing Goat Dairy, an agri-tourism farm on Maui that supplies premier cheese to grocery stores and elite resorts on the island and the mainland.  It was quite entertaining to see their operation, taste their cheeses, and see how another small-scale farm has chosen to carve out a niche in the market.
