Farm Fresh Weekly Eating healthy for your pets We are thinking of making a ground pet food from chicken. Is this something you would be interested in?
Eggs! More eggs! The young layers have started laying and we are now getting about a dozen eggs a day from them. When they start to lay eggs, the eggs are smaller and are called "pullet" eggs. They are just as good as (if not better than) the eggs the older hens lay and are priced according to size. In a recipe that calls for two eggs you might need to use three instead.
Last chicken butchering We will have our last chicken butchering of the season on September 28. Let us know if you would like fresh chicken or parts so we can plan accordingly.
Fryer feed Since we will be butchering our last batch of fryers on Monday, we will not be making more fryer feed. We do have some left so if you want any let us know right away, otherwise we will turn it into layer feed. Stories from the farm This past week we moved some cattle down the road to a winter pasture that we have. In the morning we gathered the cattle we wanted to take but when we counted we were one short. We looked all around but could not if the missing one. The cattle had been in the pine trees by Daniel's house so had quite a bit of cover but we went through pretty carefully. We finally decided that our numbers were off and we had them all so took them to the pasture. Latter that day the missing animal showed up wondering where all his herd mates were. The only thing we can figure out is that he found a very good hiding place. Healthy food for healthy living. Daniel King and Kenneth King JaKo, Inc. 6003 E. Farm Fresh Weekly Eating healthy Here is a piece about genetically modified organisms (GMO's) that I think you will all find helpful. It is a very important part of eating healthy.
Beef sides We will soon stop butchering beef for the season. If you are interested in a side(s) let us know soon. I think we have enough in the freezer to keep the sales room stocked all winter.
Last chicken butchering We will have our last chicken butchering of the season on September 28. Let us know if you would like fresh chicken or parts so we can plan accordingly.
Apples for cooking or sauce We will have cooking apples this week and then we will take what is left to Prairie Harvest in Newton on Friday. We will have some eating apples for awhile. Stories from the farm Summer is coming to an end. Yesterday our family (the ones that are around) got together and made applesauce. That is one of the last big food preparations of the season for us. It is always fun to get the family together for such projects. I thank God for a family that likes to work together. Healthy food for healthy living. Daniel King and Kenneth King JaKo, Inc. 6003 E. Farm Fresh Weekly New buying club drop in west Wichita We are in the process of changing the buying club delivery a bit. We will be adding a west Wichita drop off location on a trial basis in addition to the east Wichita drop. We have had requests for delivery to your door so will be adding that as well within the city limits of Wichita. We will charge an additional $30 for this service.
Chicken remains for pet food Some customers have placed orders for chicken carcasses for pet food. A carcass consists of the bones and guts. If you would like some as well let us know soon.
To Ohio this week Judy and I traveled to Ohio this week for the funeral of our brother-in-law's father. Our sympathies are with the family. It was a fast trip and included several business stops to deliver a bunch of fencing supplies and pick up more along with some mineral. The best part was stopping in Goshen and to spend time with our son, David, and his wife, Haly.
Cider in Newton We will be supplying the apples for Prairie Harvest in Newton for their fall apple cider festival September 26. Prairie Harvest is a wonderful organic/natural store that you should visit if you're in the area. They will sell our apples and also press them into cider as part of their festival, so any cider you purchase from them is exactly like ours here. Stories from the farm This week the cooler filled up with apples so an expansion was in order. We opened the door and stacked apples around it. When we had all the boxes of apples in place we tacked up plastic and put a fan in the door to increase circulation. By the next morning the temperature was down to where we wanted it. Cooler weather is highly appreciated. Healthy food for healthy living. Daniel King and Kenneth King JaKo, Inc. 6003 E. Eales Rd Hutchinson, KS 67501 www.jakoinc.com 620.663.1470

Farm Fresh Weekly Cheese bags We are starting to use vacuum sealed ziplock bags to package our cheese for your convenience. Be sure to check the bag before you tear it open so you don't open the wrong end.
Chicken butchering We plan on butchering our first batch of fryers September 14. If you are interested in purchasing some fresh before they are frozen, let us know how many and then plan on being here that afternoon from 3-6 pm to pick them up. We will butcher again September 28.
Milk jugs may leak We have had several customers tell us that their plastic jugs leak when they are thawing milk. We know this is a problem and have experienced it ourselves. The problem is that the manufacturer will not accept responsibility since we are not using the jug in the way it was manufactured to be used. We could purchase a better jug but it would take the price up about $1.00/jug. So we live with the problem. Be sure and set the jug in something to thaw so if it does leak it will not make a mess. You can also cut the jug off and thaw the milk in another container.
All apples are off the trees Yesterday we picked the last batch of apples-- the Jonathan variety. After we sort them tomorrow we will have cooking apples available in the sales room. If you have ordered apples this is your notice that they are ready. Fresh eating apples are $.20/each and cooking apples are $15.00/half bushel bag. Stories from the farm Sometimes we are not always happy about the weather here on the farm. Like when we have to work outside and it is 110 degrees in the sun or the wind is blowing 50 mph with a wind chill of -10 degrees. But this week was different. I got up Thursday morning to go chore and it was raining so I took a bit longer with my devotions and by the time I went out it had stopped. I did my chores and came in for breakfast and as soon as I got in the house it started raining again. It was like I was being watched from above and God had his finger on the faucet.
