Farm Fresh Weekly Food vs. medicine This week I was talking about our food with a customer and they stopped me and said "what you sell is not just food, it is medicine. It has done so much for me health wise and saved me so much money. Do not compare your prices with what is in the grocery store, compare them with the pharmacy." I could not have said it better.
Sunday sales You are welcome to come to the sales room any day of the week (including Sunday), but keep in mind that we do not re-stock the sales room for Sunday. We find that God knew what he was doing when He said work six days and rest on the seventh. So if you come on Sunday, you run the risk that we might be out of something if we had a big sales day on Saturday.
Kendra and Mark This week Kendra and Mark moved to Maui. They are working for a mission training organization which brings in church leaders from around the world for continuing education and advanced training. We hope to visit them this winter, but right now I am enjoying our cooler weather while they are still pretty hot.
Stories from the farm This morning in church someone ask me how my week went and I said that it was good because while picking apples this week, I only got chigger bites on one leg. Some times little things are really good. Healthy food for healthy living. Daniel King and Kenneth King JaKo, Inc. 6003 E. Eales Rd Hutchinson, KS 67501 www.jakoinc.com 620.663.1470

Farm Fresh Weekly Absorbing nutrients Did you know that according to Dr. Mercola, unless you eat some fat with your tomatoes you will not absorb all the nutrients? What another wonderful way to use butter. Spread some on your tomato today.
Apple cider Last Thursday, the family picked the first round of apples at our Moundridge orchard. We then pressed cider from a combination of Priscilla, Jonathan, and Liberty varieties. This created a very nice cider and is a bit more tart than last year. So now we have both kinds in the sales room--cider from this year that is a bit more tart, and the cider from last year that is sweeter. The way to tell the difference is that this year we put the date on the cider--2009-- and last year has no date. We also have a few of the nice Priscillas for sale (good for baking). We will pick again soon and will have Jonathan and Liberty varieties available.
Egg shortage Due to some predator problems, our layer population is down and we have been very short of eggs lately, as many of you know. We do have 200 layer chicks growing very fast but it will still be about the first of November before they start laying. It takes about six months from hatching till they are in production. Thanks for being patient while we wait out the shortage.
Stories from the farm We have water valves all around the farm to water the livestock with and these are in casings with a flat rock on top to protect them. The other morning I moved the cows' waterer and took the rock off the casing to plug the hose into. The casing was full of something which is usually sand from moles or mice digging or building homes in them. I reached down to dig out the dirt and it was soft like grass. I pulled out a handful and immediately, I heard a loud buzzing and the riser erupted with bumble bees. I quickly backed off and watched until they settled down then put the rock back in place and went to the next riser. The diversity of "livestock" we have is quite intriguing. Farm Fresh Weekly Saving money on cleaning products After last week's blurb about cleaning tips, a customer told us about her blog in which she talked more in-depth about her suggestions. Here they are, take a look (if that link doesn't work, go to: http://bootcampforlousyhousekeepers.blogspot.com/2009/07/better-basics-for-your-abode.html)
Grain mill upgraded! Those of you who used the hand-cranked mill this week will heartily appreciate that we have purchased an electric mill to grind the wheat with. It is a Nutrimill, which comes highly recommended, and allows you to adjust the fineness or coarseness desired. It is being delivered this afternoon and we are quite excited about it.

Stories from the farm Watching the weather is a part of life here on the farm. Last night it was thundering and lightning as a storm rolled in. We watched the rain sheets come from the west at a rapid pace and were about ready to head inside. As the rain approached the west side of the barn it stopped coming and then quit. What a disappointment. Part of the farm received a shower and the rest remained dry. Again it was a typical summer thunderstorm in Kansas. Healthy food for healthy living. Farm Fresh Weekly Saving money on cleaning products Several months ago, Judy discovered a homemade laundry soap that is more natural and much cheaper than detergent you buy in the store. She began making it for our family, and also put some in the sales room. If you haven't tried it, you really should.
This week, Judy and Kendra were looking for healthier alternatives to other cleaning products, and wanted to share a few with you: --to make soft scrub for cleaning sinks, toilets, etc.: mix homemade laundry detergent with baking soda until it reaches frosting consistency --to make solvent- and chemical-free furniture polish: mix equal parts white vinegar and lemon juice
Wheat berries available Although many people don't think about it, white and whole wheat flour from the store are very processed baking materials. Fresh ground flour is much healthier, primarily because much of the nutrient value of wheat is housed in an oil, but it sours several days after wheat is ground. To increase shelf life, this oil is removed from commercial flour, taking with it many highly-valuable nutrients.
Therefore, we are very excited to provide bio-dynamically* grown wheat berries and a small hand-cranked mill in the sales room. This mill is fairly slow, but we hope to upgrade it soon.
We hope you enjoy the opportunity to have fresh-milled flour! Just remember, if you're not going to use the milled flour within a day or two, stick it in the freezer to prevent souring. If you need help give us a call.
*Biodynamics considers the soil and farm as living organisms and focuses on protecting the life of the soil and the self-sustaining life of the farm. In a biodynamic farm, animals and plants are cultivated together in mutually beneficial ways. Biodynamics requires a large number of sustainable practices: crop rotation, very specific compost makeup including medicinal herbs, proper working of the soil and the planting of certain beneficial species, among other requirements. Yoder Days celebration August 22 The little town of Yoder is where we do much of our business, including banking, auto repair, and the butcher. Their annual celebration is Saturday, August 22, and draws thousands of visitors each year. Our son-in-law, Mark, will have a pottery booth there, so if you're looking for a quaint way to spend the day, come on over!
Stories from the farm We recently got two kittens from the neighbor because of an increasing mouse problem on the farm. One we named Snowflake (it looked like Daniel's old dog, Snowman), and the other Amos. Amos and Snowflake have been so hilarious to watch as they get stuck in trees, try to avoid the menacing and ferocious Duke, and learn to eat baby mice. Friday, Amos ate four mice in a row. It was Thanksgiving dinner for him, and he appropriately slept the rest of the day. Healthy food for healthy living. Daniel King and Kenneth King JaKo, Inc. 6003 E. Farm Fresh Weekly The real cost of food We all know that money is tight right now. We are all looking for ways to cut costs, and for many, one thing that comes to mind is purchasing less expensive food at your local grocery store. But is it really cheaper?
Let's use milk as an example. To be able to sell a gallon of milk at low grocery store prices means that it was produced by the least-cost producer. The least-cost producer has to produce it cheaply with the least amount of inputs, maybe adding a few hormones and lots of genetically modified grain to artificially increase milk production in unhealthy cows. Then the milk is pasteurized and homogenized to further deplete the little nutrient value it started with.
At first this low-cost gallon of milk seemed like a real winner... but what you don't see are the affects. Your child's immunity is lowered and one day the school nurse calls you at work and says to come get your sick child. So you leave work, drive to school to pick up your child and take them to the doctor. Your child has to stay out of school for a week, which means that you either stay home and loose the income from your job or you hire someone else to stay with them.
Now how much did all of this cost because of a lowered immune system that just might have been prevented by purchasing a wholesome, nutrient-dense gallon of milk? Which food is less expensive in the long run?
Beef We are nearing the end of the time period when we butcher the majority of the beef for the year. The reason we butcher beef at this time is because it has been fattened up on good spring and summer grass and is now at its prime. If you still want a side of beef or are still trying to make up your mind, let us know. You don't need to pick it up immediately--we can store it in the freezer until you can handle it-- but we do need to reserve it for you.
Dairy production We are getting to the time of year where we start freezing milk for winter sales. That means we stop making butter and cheese except for experimental batches. Production seasons change just like weather.
Stories from the farm The other morning when I went out to chore there was a baby wren on the floor that acted like he had left the nest about 12 hours to soon so I put him in a safe place. Later, as I walked out to get the cows in the pasture, I observed a turkey buzzard flying around looking for breakfast and further on were two deer on the levee happily partaking of theirs. The temperature was in the 60's and it was really nice and peaceful. Sorry that most of you have to live in town. Healthy food for healthy living. Daniel King and Kenneth King JaKo, Inc. 6003 E.
