Farm Fresh Weekly

Three meals per chicken
I ran across this interesting educational piece from a good friend, Shannon Hayes, who is a fellow producer and writes cookbooks.  At a farmers market she was asked to explain everything the customer needed to know about buying a pasture-raised chicken directly from a farmer, and how to make use of every last bit of it.   Here is her response: Chicken, Inside and OutWe also carry some of her cookbooks in the sales room.

Apples will soon be ready
This year in addition to red and yellow Delicious, we will have Jonathan and Liberty varieties (both good eating apples) and Priscilla (a cider apple) available in the sales room.  If you are interested in purchasing a large quantity for canning, let us know so we can accommodate.  We will have a better idea of the price when we know how many we have.

Sweet corn
Yesterday, our family froze our yearly supply of sweet corn.  It is one of those jobs that is a lot of work but is also a family tradition that everyone looks forward to.  In fact, Kendra and Daniel cut short their vacation to come home and help.  We plant it for ourselves and then give the rest away, so if you are out this week and would like some, help yourself.

Web site corrupted
We had a customer contact us this week saying that our web site was corrupted by an Asian entity trolling for money.  It was gone the next day but please know we try to take precautions against this kind of problem.

Baby chicks are arriving
We have a batch of broiler chicks in the brooder house and another batch scheduled to arrive next week.  That means in about eight weeks we will have fresh chicken for sale.  More information about butchering dates and how you can get fresh chicken coming soon...

Stories from the farm
We had a wonderful time in Canada last week for David and Haly's wedding, and the newlyweds are on their honeymoon in Colorado.  Kaydee did great job of taking care of things here on the farm.  The only disappointment was that while we were gone, Daniel's dog Snowman disappeared.  I guess he was just lonesome for Daniel.  We hope that he still shows up sometime.

Different types of milk
In the book, The Devil in the Milk, written by Dr. Keith Woodford, the author talks about the different kinds of milk.  In particular, the difference between milk from Holstein cows and that from older breeds (Jersey and Brown Swiss).  Dr. Woodford’s book presents research showing a direct correlation between a population’s exposure to Holstein cow’s milk and incidences of autoimmune disease, heart disease, type 1 diabetes, autism, and schizophrenia.  This relationship was not found from the older breeds.  So, not only are our customers getting the benefit of all grass raw milk, but they are also getting the benefits that the older breeds impart!

Sales room back to normal
This past week we got all the coolers and freezers working in the sales room, so it is back to normal.  But what is normal around here?  We do appreciate the large glass door cooler again!

New hatch
Normally for us, this would be in reference to chickens; but this week when I was mowing the lawn, I felt bad for all the little frogs.  I didn't know we had that much moisture, but we sure had a good hatch of them.  They are interesting to watch.

Stories from the farm
This week Kaydee Welchons (our summer intern 2 years ago) came back to review our operation.  She will be handling the chores and taking care of the place this week when we are in Canada for David and Haly's wedding.  She was a bit apprehensive at first, but found that it all came back fairly quickly.  We want to say a big thank you to her.  She is doing a great job.  We will not be sending out a Farm Fresh Weekly next week due to the festivities.

Informational/Educational blurb
Many of our customers are eager to learn new things about health and nutrition.  Starting next week we will be having another paragraph with either information or education or a link to the same.  Please give me your reactions and if you have information that needs to be shared let me know.

Wheat berries
We are considering selling wheat berries in the sales room and having a grinder there so that you can grind your own whole wheat flour.  We need your input.  Is this something that interests you?  We need a large enough interest group to make this work.

New customers
We have had several new customers the past few weeks all from referrals from current customers.  We want to say a special thank you for referring us to them.  That is one important way that you can help us stay in business.

Stories from the farm
This weekend Judy and I are in Goshen, IN.  David got a job back there and after his wedding to Haly, they will be living there.  We brought a load of furniture out for them to help furnish the apartment they rented as of 1 July.  It is fun to watch and help them set up a home of their own.  We give them our blessings and pray Our Lord best for them.
