Farm Fresh Weekly Congratulations Our future daughter-in-law, Haly Williamson graduated from Goshen College today. She received a degree in education with an emphasis in secondary math. Hopefully they will find jobs so that after a July wedding they will be ready to go.
Cheese Daniel made our first batch of cheese on Friday of this week. All went as planned if we had planned for all the changes we had to make. It is interesting how things never turn out as imagined. The cheese turned out acceptable for the first batch.
Garden We had hoped to work the garden and plant it this week but every time it was about dry enough it rained again. But one of these days it will get planted.
Party reminder Don't forget, we are having a spring party on the farm for all of our customers on Memorial Day, May 25. Be sure to plan on coming. We will be serving lunch for a donation.
Stories from the farm This year we are using half of the milk cows as nurse cows by bonding two calves on each cow and milking the ones without calves. Yesterday the cow that I was trying to make a nurse cow was quite protective of her calf and chased me out of the pen several times. That is something that I am not used to around here. Hopefully she will bond to the other calf as well.

Farm Fresh Weekly Yogurt and Kefir available We now have fresh plain yogurt, vanilla yogurt and kefir in the sales room. Of course it is always good to have fresh product available but what is better for me is that I always taste the product when we start up in the spring and this week I have been over indulging. :)
Cream To bad not every thing good comes at once. This week we have fresh cream in the sales room but alas no strawberries to go with it.
Sales room Since we have added all of our fresh dairy products to the sales room we had to bring in the other glass door refrigerator. Some things have moved around a bit so if you can't find what you want keep looking. If you still can't find it let us know as maybe it is something we do not carry but should.
Stories from the farm One of our ewes had triplets last week. Our sheep are tame but you can not just walk up and pet them and some of the mommas are pretty protective. As I observed the triplets from a distance I noticed that one of them just didn't seem to be getting along to well. When I went out and picked it up I noticed that on of its hind legs was broken. Knowing that it would never make it on its own we brought it up to the house and Daniel took it to a neighbor who adopts all the orphan lambs in the community. When she saw it she said no problem. She got out some popsicle sticks and tape and fixed him up. Since she bottle feeds all her lambs it will be close to the house and not have to walk much for a while. It was a nice ending for us.

Farm Fresh Weekly Easter joy Today we celebrate life in a new way. Jesus Christ came to give his life for us and then gave us new life. He truly gave us a great example of who to live for and how to live. May we follow him more.
Spring party update Things are coming together nicely for our spring party on Memorial Day, May 23 except the garden. Seems that plants are not too interested in growing in cool weather but then that could change quickly. If anyone would be interested in helping us prepare and serve lunch let us know.
Lambs and calves On the first day of lambing this week we had 9 lambs born. All seemed to be doing very well. We also have about 15 baby calves running around. It is great to watch newborns experience life. Seeing young animals is always a highlight for customers at our spring party so don't miss out!
Fresh milk We now should have sufficient fresh milk for everyone and hopefully by the middle of the week we will have enough to separate so that we have cream and skim milk as well.
Stories from the farm David and Haly came home for Easter so on Friday evening the family walked out to see the new lambs. One was sleeping as the flock grazed nearby so I walked over and picked him up. The family all took turns holding and petting him. When we put him down so he could go back to his mother, all he wanted to do was follow us. It took a bit of trickery on our part to get out of the paddock without him following.

Farm Fresh Weekly Milking this spring We started milking on Saturday. Several cows calved, so now we have baby calves running around. We also have fresh milk in the sales room which will be in limited supply for a while. We also have colostrum again, and cheese made from our own milk!
Product quality This week I had a customer remind me what I too often take for granted. They said that when they fry a pound of our ground beef, they end up with a pound of usable product; compared to frying a pound of ground beef from the store in which they loose a considerable amount due to fry out. As with the rest of our nutrient-dense products, they go a lot further than commodity products purchased from our competitors.
Making your dollars go further The best way to make your food dollars go further is to purchase less processed products; rather than buying cheaper-quality products. Not only is this nutritionally better for you, but studies show that the time spent preparing food with family members is good for your emotional health as well.
Stories from the farm Yesterday when I was doing the chores, I heard the sound of tin flapping around the barn. I thought it was a loose piece in the barn so didn't pay too much attention to it. Later when I came driving in the driveway, I noticed that it was the tin on the roof that was flapping. It was coming loose from the air pressure underneath, but was staying together as one piece and looked like a big water wave going across the roof. I called Daniel and we were able to fasten the roof down well enough to hold it on until the wind goes down. Next week we will need to get up on the roof and finish securing it. What a lot of wind we've had!
