Farm Fresh Weekly Cheese making This week we have scheduled a local cheese maker to make some cheese for us as an experiment. On Tuesday he will make cheddar so we can have some curds and press the rest. Then on Friday he is making colby. Look for the curds right away and the pressed cheeses later on.
Pottery Our new son-in-law Mark Horst is an accomplished potter who is trying to establish himself in the area. We have some samples on display in the sales room and will soon have a page on the web site. Check it out if you are in the market for the unusual gift idea or if you want something customized. Mark also made us a new money jar.
Lawn and garden fertilizer We are Fertrell dealers and carry a limited amount of lawn and garden fertilizer and weed control products. All their products are organic or listed in the acceptable products for organic production. Check out their web site to find out more.
Stories from the farm Weather is always a factor here on the farm. It seems that we think it is too hot or cold, wet or dry, a beautiful spring day or lovely calm evening. This week I thought that we had way too much snow but Daniel just loved it. Our spring blizzard did cause some discomfort for the livestock, froze the forsythia blossoms, dropped sales way down and even Duke wasn't sure that he wanted to venture out in it. He had spent the night in the shed and when I looked out in the morning I could see him running back and forth inside trying to decided if it was worth coming out. At that point I knew that I wouldn't enjoy it but about that time the phone rang. It was the neighbor's wife who was trying to come home from work and got stuck. We spent all morning with three tractors and a skid loader but finally got her home. But then that is what life is all about-- helping others.

Farm Fresh Weekly Spring party update Things are coming together nicely for our spring party on Memorial Day, May 23. Two customers have volunteered to share their expertise by leading workshops-- one on organic gardening and the other on making toaster waffles using millet flour with samples included. I do not think you will want to miss it.
Spring is here Wow! The grass has really started to grow and the trees started to bud this week. Am I ever ready. We have a wonderful God who was so creative.
Nearby farm sale We have spent several days this winter helping to get ready for my cousin's farm sale. It includes all kinds of things collected during thirty years of farming. The sale is this Saturday morning at 9:30 a mile east and 1/2 south of our place. You all are welcome to come.
Stories from the farm Several days ago I was working on the automatic door (opens and closes according to the time of day) on the chicken house when I accidentally crossed two wires and burnt it out. Since the replacement is not here yet we need to go out after dark and close the door and open it again in the morning. The other night when I was on my way out to close it there was a big barn owl sitting on top of a 1/2" fiber glass fence post. It looked kind of like a hat pin but he was doing a fine job of balancing and didn't seem to appreciate me driving by. He should be getting very fat from all the mice I have been seeing in the pasture.

Farm Fresh Weekly Spring party We have scheduled our spring party for May 25, Memorial day. We will have farm tours, classes and lunch. Please mark your calenders and plan to attend. It is a great day to enjoy the farm, share with fellow customers and give us feedback. If you have a suggestion for a class or would like to present one let us know. We are looking for topics that correspond with what we are doing.
Barn renovations We have been making some changes in our dairy processing room to increase traffic flow. We also purchased a jug filler to decrease the amount of time spent filling jugs. Small changes but hopefully big time savers.
Eggs The yolk of the eggs should start getting darker yellow again. As the new grass starts growing we notice a decrease in the amount of feed we have to give the chickens and how much the chickens graze around the layer house. Chickens eating lots of new grass translates into more health benefits for you.
Stories from the farm This week we had our yearly reminder of why, when we decided to milk seasonally, we choose April first to start milking. The first year we were seasonal the cows started to calve the end of February. The middle week in March of that year we had the worst blizzard of the year. The next year it happened again so that year we waited to breed the cows so that they would calve starting in April the next year. We have observed that just about every year we get a really cold spell during one one of the middle weeks of March which always reaffirms our decision.

Farm Fresh Weekly Apple cider-- now available frozen Apple cider sales are up so we decided to place frozen cider in the freezer for your convenience. It is located by the chicken wings and feet.
Rain We were blessed last night with a half inch of rain. I enjoy dry winters since they make chores much easier but we were in the need of moisture for the spring grasses and last night we got it.
Skunks One of the things I enjoy doing is observing nature. This past week we saw a skunk with a white back with a small black strip down the middle. Normally our skunks have a black back with a small white strip down the middle.
Stories from the farm This week, we moved the chickens to a different paddock and stopped to fill up their water at a water valve in a pit (they are scattered around the pasture). When I opened the lid of the pit, I found a mouse nest made entirely of chicken feathers that had been gathered from the area. Two big mice were living in the nest. I grabbed one and threw it out among the chickens, who had gathered around. The mouse ran in circles for a while as the chickens chased it and then dashed back in the pit. I threw it out again, and again, the chickens chased it in circles before it dashed back in again. I decided to leave the mouse alone and put the lid back on the pit, but the next morning when I went back, the mice had moved out. I guess they sought less stressful living conditions.

Farm Fresh Weekly Eating locally I am asked quiet often about the best way to start eating locally. This past week I came across a short primer from LocalHarvest on the subject I thought was worth passing on.
Organic apple orchard in the works We are talking to a customer from Moundridge who has an organic apple orchard about picking and selling their apples next year. It would be a good complement to the orchard we now manage in Medora, since the trees are of different varieties. So hopefully if the weather cooperates, we will have a bigger selection of apples next year.
Apples cider The owners of the orchard at Moundridge have a larger cider press that we borrowed this week to press the rest of our apples into cider. The apples were starting to have some soft spots so we pressed most of them. To our surprise, we had more apples than what we thought and got more cider than we were expecting! Consequently, we are passing on the blessing to you. We are increasing the value of the cider to you by allowing your dollars to purchase more. Until we run out, cider will be $4.50/half gallon. The containers still are marked at $6.00 so you will need to remember. There will also be a sign on the door reminding you of the added blessing.
Stories from the farm Life is not always as simple as it seems. We try to turn the bulls in with the open cows at a certain time in the summer so that all the cows calve within a short time span in the spring. Well, sometimes cattle are like people and the hormones get flowing. Last spring we had a cow jump the fence and get in with the bulls. This past Friday we harvested the consequences. We had a little bull calf born about 30 days before we were expecting it. Momma and baby are doing fine.
