CSA update
We have decided to cancel our plans for offering a CSA (Customer Supported Agriculture) of vegetables this year.  It became apparent that we lacked two things: enough person-power to facilitate an effective CSA, and lack of committed participants.

Calf names
Every year, we name all the calves born that year with the same letter of the alphabet.  This year, calf names will all start with "J".  (That way we can tell at a glance how old they are.)  If you would like to help us come up with names, please submit your entries now.  Limit your choices to 5 letters or less.  It is hard to get more than 5 letters on a ear tag.  Thanks for your help.

Winter projects
Wow, with the weather this week (temperature up to 70) the work we were doing outside seemed like spring work.  When I talked to a friend in Ohio and mentioned what it was like he responded, "Don't call me again until it is 110 there and 75 here."  They just had 3 days of below zero temperatures.

Stories from the farm
Daniel and I were trimming trees this week when we cut up a big log that was hollow.  I kept expecting to see a raccoon poke his nose out but didn't.  I felt kind of bad for destroying some creature's home.

Frozen cream and yogurt
Our frozen cream and yogurt is in the freezer above the chicken parts.  Most people tell us that they let the yogurt thaw completely before using but some prefer to eat it mostly frozen.  Let us know how you like it.

Winter projects
This winter's projects include doing some remodeling on Daniel's house, helping a neighbor get ready for a farm auction, trimming trees along fence lines, reading, and relaxing.  It is nice to have a slower pace.

Stories from the farm
We have an old family recipe for smoked summer sausage.  We only make it in the winter because for us, the easiest way to smoke it is to take a bucket of hot coals from the wood stove in the house to the smoke house for our fire source, then put green fruit wood chips on top of the fire to generate the smoke.  This provides smoke for about 6 hours.  So after about 7 smokings we have a heavy natural smoke flavor.  We really enjoy this product all year long.

Product availability
We have had several people ask if we will have enough of our products to supply our customers until spring.  We feel certain that we have enough of the basics for you.  Feel free to tell your friends about us as well.

Predator problems
This is the time of year that we have to deal with predators.  Red tail hawks like chicken when there is little else for them to eat and then there is the occasional stray dog helping himself to a chicken or duck dinner.  I guess this is all in the food chain plan of Mother Nature.

Home for the winter
We have traveled a considerable distance this winter and just returned home from Mark & Kendra's wedding reception in PA; but I think for the most part we will be at home for the rest of the winter.  Hopefully the weather will stay nice so we can get caught up on the winter projects that have been put off.

Stories from the farm
On Saturday morning, Daniel and I were putting out round bales which we use to supplement the grass for the dry milking cows.  This entails placing about 6 bales in each paddock, cutting the net wrap off, and unrolling them.  We place fences between every bale so during the week we just go out and move the fence past the next bale and presto the cows are fed.  This time as we were unrolling the bales the sheep were playing "King on the bale."  It was really fun to watch.
