Farm Fresh Weekly Fresh milk Today was the last day we milked, and we have about 50 gallon of fresh milk to sell, and then it will be gone for the year. We anticipate having enough frozen milk, cream, yogurt and butter to last all winter until we start milking again next spring. I sure enjoy the break from the daily chores; and by the way the cows respond to coming to the barn (very slowly) I know they enjoy the break, too.
Colby cheese Like all products from a grass-fed dairy operation, there is some variance from batch to batch. If you thought the colby cheese we were selling in the sales room was dry, give it another try! The next batch we made and just cut up and packaged for the sales room is much more moist and soft.
Pasture planting Saturday we no-till planted some barley, oats, wheat and vetch seed into pasture that we had grazed down pretty hard this fall. Hopefully it will give us some good grazing next spring. It was nice to borrow a big tractor with automatic steering and no-till drill from the neighbor. All we had to do when we came to the edge of the field was raise the drill and turn around, then hit a button and it steered itself to the other end. Although it was easy, it made me appreciate the pastoral setting of walking my cows home to be milked.
Stories from the farm Tonight I am experiencing the anticipation and waiting that I imagine the Hebrew people did in waiting for the Christ child. Kendra and Mark are flying home tonight from Maui and we will go to Wichita in the morning to pick them up. They will be managing at the Sunflower Inn Bed & Breakfast in Yoder. It is always good to have family around.
