Farm Fresh Weekly Our Christmas present to you With the current state of the economy, we realize that Christmas may be a bit different this year for many people. We, too, have felt a slow-down in the economy, but generosity is not limited by economic factors. We can't tell you enough how much you have blessed us with your support.
If you have purchased over $500 in products during the past year, we will be sending you a gift certificate for 5% of your purchases redeemable for lamb, chicken pieces, or apple products. It's our way of making everyone's Christmas a little more special this year.
Look for your certificate coming to you via email in the next week or so.
Economic time affect us all, including the butcher This week when I was at our butcher shop, Allan informed me that our cost for killing a beef is going up $30 because he is not able to sell the hides anymore. He had been receiving $30/hide but since most beef hides are used in the automotive industry for seat covers the demand for them has collapsed.
Egg dating As a service to you we have started adding a "best if used by date" to our egg label. Look for it in the lower right hand corner of the label. We hope this helps you keep your egg purchases current in your refrigerator.
Buying club delivery date changes If you purchase products through the Wichita buying club, please note the delivery changes for the Christmas holiday. We will make deliveries on December 9 and 23. After that we will go back to every three weeks. Stories from the farm Daniel and I will be driving to Pennsylvania this week where I will be speaking at a conference about our operation and how special all of our customers are. We will also take a couple of days to visit other like-minded producers along the way to encourage and learn from them.

Farm Fresh Weekly Thanksgiving blessings and price decreases Earlier this fall, we realized that we would run out of milk this winter. As a result, we increased the price of milk and used the extra income to purchase more cows. We now feel that we have an adequate supply of milk. Therefore, we will be dropping the price of milk to $6/gallon (fresh) and $7/gallon (frozen). We are very thankful for wonderful customers who take care of us and we want to pass on the blessing.
Some of you have refrained from telling others about us because of our short supply. This is no longer the case, as we have plenty to go around.
Tree trimming One of the annual projects on the farm is trimming the trees on our property. No, we do not decorate all the Christmas trees that came when we purchased Daniel's house. We mean the literal trimming of the trees-- cutting back limbs that have grown over fences this year. It is not a big project but if not done every year, grows into a big problem. So when we have free time and the weather is nice that is one of our winter projects.
Lamb butchering We have scheduled the last of this season's lamb crop to be butchered in mid December. This will stock the sales room until late next year when we butcher again. If you are interested in a lamb or side of lamb, let us know. Stories from the farm We had an interesting wind blow through this week. On Friday I was outside working when the wind came up and it blew the desire to work outside all away. I came in the house and had a cup of coffee.

Farm Fresh Weekly Long range planning Last week I mentioned that we would be meeting with a consultant to do some goal setting and long-range planning this week. We did, and I feel that it was very helpful in deepening family communications. We reaffirmed that we have a great team with lots of potential. The hard part was trying to figure out how to tap into all the talents that our customer have to offer to make this a much stronger and customer-friendly farm.
Questions were ask about how large we want to grow and in what direction. Would customers come together and help us purchase more farm land if it became available? How do we involve extended family members and customers in day-to-day operations.
We figured out that we are operating a very elite private club of which you are all members. Lots of people come and go looking for inexpensive products; but it is you, our committed customers, who have discovered the real value of quality, nutritionally dense food that we are really committed to.
If you have any thoughts or comments about the above info please feel free to get in contact with us.
Stories from the farm It is really nice this time of year to have the flexibility to chore when we want. Several days this week it was really windy and not very nice to be outside, so we would pick the warmest time of the day to chore. If we started at 2:00 and everyone was here to help, by 3:00 we were done and could enjoy an afternoon cup of coffee.

Farm Fresh Weekly Health tip from fellow customers Several customers have told us that when they start to feel a cold or the flu coming on they get a jug of colostrum out of the freezer, thaw enough for a glass or two and put the rest back in the freezer. They say that usually one glass will cure the problem but often drink two just to make sure. What a simple and healthy way to deal with something that Americans spend billions on. Recently someone asked me what colostrum tastes like. I asked if that was a question they ask the doctor when he/she prescribes medication. I am more than happy with the taste in that situation.
Long range planning This week our family team is spending time with a certified educator/trainer to review our goals and do some planning, both long- and short-term. We want to be more proactive in the direction our operation takes rather than just reacting to the current situation. Our highly qualified facilitator is both a customer and family friend who knows our business well. Please keep us in your prayers.
Turkey time Several people have inquired about turkeys this year. We do not have any, and we do not know anyone locally who does. Instead, we suggest that for Thanksgiving this year, surprise your guests with a nice leg of lamb or baked chicken breasts. Be creative and start a new tradition. Stories from the farm This week one evening when I was out bringing the cows up to milk, a jackrabbit jumped up and ran away. This really surprised me because I had not seen a jackrabbit around here for years. When I was a boy we had lots of them, but over the years I guess that rabbit fever wiped them out. It is always good to see diversity in the wildlife population.

Farm Fresh Weekly Saving money According to the NPD Group, a market research company, restaurant meals now cost on average about three times what it takes to make a similar meal at home. Wow that is exciting for those of us who like to eat at home and also control the quality of the food we eat. Not only are we saving money but we are building family relations by working in the kitchen, eating together and then washing the dishes.
Egg productin In our portable chicken house we have a solar lighting system. This time of year maintaining a longer day length keeps egg production up. Last week one day egg production dropped by about half and after checking we discovered that the battery had gone bad. Hopefully with a replacement battery and the restoration of a longer day length production will increase again. Stories from the farm This past summer we had a really neat tomato cage thanks to another business partner. The tomatoes grew really well and by late summer the fruit was really hanging on. Being the very thrifty guy that I am and wanting to please my wife with more tomatoes, I went to the hardware store and purchased a big sheet of plastic to put over the cage kind of like a hoop house. It worked fairly well only needing a few repairs after strong winds. So I was really anticipating having tomatoes into November and I though maybe December. Well not so. The first frost that we got was not only a frost but a hard freeze with my thermometer reading in the teens. The next day I looked at the tomatoes and they were all frozen. Well we will try again next year.
