Honey
Several months ago we tried to contacted our honey man, who had been supplying us for several years, to purchase more honey.  His phone was disconnected and after asking around, we discovered that he had retired and sold all of his hives and equipment.  So the search was on for more honey that fit our criteria of local, raw and unfiltered.  We finally found a producer from Haddam, Kansas who has hives all over central Kansas.  Last week he delivered four drums to us, but the price was significantly higher.  Therefore, last year's honey is being sold at the old price but when we run out, the new honey will have a price increase.

Last of the beef to the butcher
This week, I delivered the last three cattle of the season to the butcher.  If you would like to purchase a side of beef, I need to know in the next few days.  Sides will not be available again until March or April.

We have plenty of beef to keep the sales room stocked through the winter.

Thanksgiving in October
No, we are not Canadians (although one will be joining our family soon) who celebrate Thanksgiving in October, but my brother and sister-in-law from Pennsylvania were in Kansas this weekend so we got the rest of the family together for a day on the farm on Saturday.  We are truly blessed with a loving family.

Stories from the farm
Yesterday, David and I (Ken) were trying to pen up one calf that had gotten away from the herd.  I opened a gate to try and chase him through, but he chose to go around the paddock and in by another route.  Having completed our mission, David and I came home.  Last night about 2:00am, I awoke with a start, remembering the gate that I had never closed.  I resolved to close it first thing in the morning.  However, fifteen minutes later, I still couldn't sleep.  I got up, went down to the pasture, and found the cattle standing at the gate in the moonlight, waiting on me to come close it.  It is good to have well-behaved cattle.

Missouri trip
I was able to go to a customer appreciation and dealer day put on by one of my fencing suppliers this week.  On Wednesday I drove to Seymour, MO for a Thursday meeting.  It was good to talk to other fencing nuts who do not build fence like "proper" fence builders do.

Rain
We had lots of rain this past week which didn't delay the cows harvesting grass near like it did the neighbors who are trying to harvest corn and soybeans.  I am still amazed how we make simple things like harvest so complicated with machines when cattle, who are most likely going to eat the grain, could harvest it themselves directly and we would all be happier.  Well maybe not the equipment manufacturers.

Stories from the farm
Since Kendra is working at Hesston College she gets to enjoy some of the benefits that the students get like fall break.  She came home on Friday evening and on Saturday she and Judy made 30+ fruit pies for her wedding reception this December.  She figures that another day making pies and she should have enough.  They will be baked the day before they are needed so that they will be fresh when served.

 Turbulent economic times
We are aware of some customers who are facing tough financial times.  We know that over the past couple years you have supported us and we would like to support you as well.  You have worked with us, trusted us and and we you.  The store has been a great success working solely on the honor system.  We feel blessed.  If you have been a customer since before October 1, 2008 we would like to make you this offer.  If you are facing financial hardships feel free to take a 10% discount for as long as you need it.  We trust you to not take advantage of us in this sharing experience.

More milk
We have now found some cows from another local grazier that we are purchasing.  They are not bred to freshen when we would like but it will give us more milk this fall.  When we want to stop milking this winter we will purchase some calves and put on them to raise this winter.  These cows have been on pasture along with some hay and whole ear corn.  We will work with them until we feel that they are producing an acceptable all grass milk before adding their milk to our supply.

More land
We had the opportunity this week to rent the pasture that surrounds the orchard where we picked the apples this year.  We will be grazing this land along with managing the orchard this winter, hoping to have another good apple crop next year.

Stories from the farm
Several months ago we told you about Daniel getting some Muscovy ducklings.  Well they have grown up and spend their days running their bills through the grass around Daniel's house and orchard.  In his back yard is a cave/storm shelter that has a concrete top that is ground level at one end and about 18"high on the other.  This morning I saw the ducks stand up there and jump off trying their wings.  It was like watching a youngster jump into a swimming pool, crawl out and jump in again.  They just kept going round and round.

Fall party a success
We had a great time last night partying with friends.  Thanks to everyone who could make it!

Apple butter available
We made apple butter yesterday, and it is available in the sales room.  We used our all natural apples, along with cider that we pressed from the apples and organic, raw sugar.  The apples and cider are also available in the sales room.  Give some a try, we think it's quite delightful.  It would also make wonderful Christmas presents.

People have been talking about the CSA...
Customers have been asking-- "What's happening with the CSA?"  We are still talking and planning... and will let you know when we make some concrete plans.  Talk to Daniel with any comments/suggestions.

If you're wondering, a CSA (Customer-Supported Agriculture) means that individuals purchase shares of vegetable production before the season starts, and then receive a portion of the production from the garden each week.

Stories from the farm
Our family is thick into wedding plans... Kendra is getting married in two months and David in about nine.  It's fun to see how each event is taking shape in the uniqueness of each couple.  It's also interesting to learn how complex an international marriage can be (David's fiancée, Haly, is from Canada).
