Farm Fresh Weekly

Congratulations
This past week, our daughter Kendra and Mark Horst announced their engagement.  Mark is from Somerset, PA and will be moving to Kansas later this summer.  He is currently looking for a job in the Hesston area where Kendra continues her work as Resident Director for the girls dorm at Hesston College.  A December wedding is planned.

Tomorrow is the big day!
We are excited about our Customer Appreciation Day tomorrow.  We will be having 3 classes taught by our customers.  From 11-12 am will be on making mayonnaise and other related products by Linda Dietz, from 12-1 will feature Holistic Living and Nutrition presented by Jan Reckers, a Holistic Nutrition Counselor, and from 1-2 pm will be a class on grinding grain and baking bread by Meagan Baldwin.

Lunch will be provided by JaKo for a donation and served from 11:30 until the food runs out.  There will be plenty of baby chicks, calves and lambs to watch and enjoy, eggs to gather, as well as the peacefulness of the country.  Bring your lawn chairs for a picnic and games if you want to play on the lawn.

When you come please park out by the silo and east so that we can keep the area by store open for load out.

Stories from the farm

Spring time is great and I am always glad to see it come, but I am also always happy to be finished with calving season.  At the beginning of this week, all but three cows had calved.  On Wednesday morning when I went out to chore there were two new baby calves.  I was very happy and quickly identified one cow as a mama.  I looked around  but was perplexed that I couldn't find the other cow that had calved.  Finally by the middle of the afternoon I discovered that I didn't have two fresh cows, but rather one with twins.  The next morning I had another fresh cow and by the middle of the afternoon the last one also calved.  With the calving season ended it is the first time that I have ever had a greater than 100% calf crop.  We had two sets of twins this season.

Chicken butchering this week
Monday we will butcher chickens.  Grain prices have gone up so we will have to take our selling price up to keep from losing money.  Whole fryers will be $3.00/lb., legs and thighs $5.00/lb and boneless skinless breast $13.00/lb.  We still have some whole fryers from last year that we will sell for the old price of $2.50/lb.

Thanks for your help
We will be cutting the legs and thighs apart and all the pieces will be in smaller bags as per your input.  Our customers like convenience as well.

Customer Appreciation Day
This week we will be busy getting the farm ready for our visitors on Memorial day.  We hope you can come!  Customer Appreciation Day will be held Monday, May 26 from 10:00 am -- 2:00 pm.  Come and go at your leisure.

Stories from the farm

One evening this past week,  Judy looked out the living room window and saw a deer in the front yard.  She thought it was pretty special that they were that close then we saw the second one.  This one was nibbling on her flowers and she was out the door in a flash shooing them away.  Interesting how our priorities change our perspective.

Farm Fresh Weekly

When I wrote the following I was optomistic
Our internet service has been down for several weeks now so the rest of this was written on May 5.  Hopefully all is back and working again.  A big thank you to David and Daniel for spending so much time on it.

Congratulations
Son David and his girlfriend Haly Williamson announced their engagement last week.  David called us while we were driving to his graduation to tell us.  Haly is from greater Kitchener, Ontario and is one year away from a secondary eduation degree in math.  She is a really neat person and a great addition to our family.  A wedding is planned for next summer.

Help--your size preference?
We need help in determining the preferred packaging size for chicken.  Regarding boneless skinless breasts-- would you like packages of 2, 4 or 6?  Regarding hind quarters (a leg and thigh pair)-- how many would you like per package and would you like these cut apart or as one unit?  Thanks for your help.

Classes for Customer Appreciation Day
We are adding another class on grinding grain and baking with it.  This class will be from 1-2 and I am hoping there will be fresh hot bread to sample at the end of the class.

Customer Appreciation Day will be held May 26 from 10:00 am -- 2:00 pm.  Come and go at your leisure.

Stories from the farm

Our internet was down for most of the week.  We use a wireless signal that comes from the top of the Haven elevator to a dish on the top of our silo.  It was finally determined that the radio receiver on the top of our silo was malfunctioning so on Friday morning a service tech came out to fix it.  Now I don't know if you remember last Friday or not, but about the time he showed up the winds were gusting out of the west at about 50 mph.  For some unknown reason he refused to climb to the top of the silo and change it out.  By evening the wind had gone down slightly and Daniel had been without communication for long enough that he decided to make the climb.  Thanks, Daniel.  Oh and by the way if you were one of the many people that emailed me this week and did not receive a reply until Friday this is why.
