Fresh yogurt-- new!
Last winter we made a new incubator for our yogurt operation.  Our goal was to have more uniform heat distribution, resulting in a thicker, more yogurt-like consistency.  From the first batch of plain yogurt, we determined that our attempt was a success!  We now have new and improved plain and vanilla yogurt available.  We still have number of quarts of frozen vanilla yogurt left and would make someone a good deal on them.  Let us know if you are interested.

Buying club delivery changes
Having evaluated the buying clubs and talking to some of the participants, we have decided to try some major changes in buying club deliveries.  Instead of a morning delivery time, we are switching to every third Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 pm with one drop point:  911 Cypress in east Wichita.  The next buying club delivery to that location will be May 13. We will continue to send out reminder notices.

David's college graduation
This Sunday, April 27, David graduates from Goshen College in Goshen, IN.  We are very proud of him.  He plans on taking a May term class, coming home to the farm for the summer and fall, and then returning to Goshen in the spring for one final class.  Judy, Kendra, and I are attending the ceremonies while Daniel is keeping the farm running.

Classes for Customer Appreciation Day
If you remember last year, several customers made presentations on healthy food-related topics, and they were a big hit! As a result, we will again be offering two presentations this year.  One class will cover making mayonnaise and other related products by Linda Dietz, and another class will feature Holistic Living and Nutrition presented by Jan Reckers, a naturalpathic nutritionist.

Customer Appreciation Day will be held May 26 from 10:00 am -- 2:00 pm.  Come and go at your leisure.

Stories from the farm

As a farmer, I have always enjoyed being in nature and watching the seasons change.  Maybe it is because the winter this year has seemed so long or that spring seems to be coming later than what I would like, but the flowers this spring have seemed really bright.  Not just the flowers but the flowering trees as well.  This week when we were on buying club delivery, we observed the redbud and crab apple trees in full bloom.  It was almost as exciting to watch them as it is to watch the baby lambs and calves run and grow.

Farm Fresh Weekly

Spring arrived this week
This week we were privileged to experience spring.  One day Daniel and I worked on the church roof, one day we moved chickens out to pasture, one day we worked in the rain and one day we just held on.  Wow, what a wind.  Our lives are always adventurous.

Buying club delivery-- is Derby susatinable?
Since last July, Derby has been a regular stop on our buying club route.  However, the amount of product dropped off there has been declining and we are not sure that we can continue to deliver to that point.  What is your input?  How can we increase the orders to make it feasible or should we discontinue this drop point?  Please help us on this matter.

Lunch for Customer appreciation day
The last several years for customer appreciation day, we have featured one of our products as the main course for lunch. This year we have decided on eggs, and I am sure that the farm cooks will come up with some usual and unusual recipes. We will prepare a full meal and serve this for a donation.

As a reminder, customer appreciation day will be held May 26 from 10:00 am -- 2:00 pm.  Come and go at your leisure.

Stories from the farm

I am not a geneticist, but this past week we birthed some baby calves with interesting color combinations.  Since they are all crossbred and we have been saving and using our own bulls for the last 5 years we are developing some line breeding. One bull calf born this week looks totally Holstein, all black and white even though his mother is light tan and white and his daddy was mostly black.

Fresh yogurt available
This week sometime we should have fresh yogurt available.  It again will be in the top of the cheese refrigerator.  We will also have fresh cream in the milk fridge.

Lambs come this week
We are again purchasing feeder lambs from a producer friend in Oklahoma.  We also plan on getting a small flock of ewes that are ready to lamb so that we can birth our own.  That means we will have baby lambs for our customer appreciation day.

Customer appreciation day
We hope that you have marked May 26 on your calendar as a day to come spend at the farm.  Or goal is to make our farm your farm, to supply you with very healthy food products.

Stories from the farm

Have you ever purchased eggs from us that had what looked like paint brush marks on them?  Never fear, that is the work of our talented group of loyal hens.  When it is muddy out and they are scratching about they get their feet dirty.  Then they go in to lay their egg and if there are already other eggs in that box and they happen to walk on them they leave muddy streaks across the egg.  We try to wash this off but depending on what part of the farm they are in the mud stains really stick.  So just enjoy the work of our talented hens.  The eggs are clean.

Fresh milk available
This past week we started milking so we now have fresh milk available.  Remember that early spring milk has lots of flavor, so if you want to sample it before you buy, open a jug and taste it.  There are cups available in the fridge with the milk.  Fresh milk is available in gallon and 1/2 gallon jugs and will be monitoring sales to see which you prefer.  The price is $5.50/gallon and $3.00/half gallon.  Frozen milk will still be available until supply runs out if you prefer.

More and more baby calves
The baby calves are coming fast.  This week we had 10 babies.  We like them to come all at once-- it makes life easier.

Beef sales
Sides of beef are selling quickly.  Some of you have expressed interest but haven't yet placed an order.  If this is you, act quickly so that we can get it scheduled when you would like it.

Stories from the farm

We treat our livestock like we treat ourselves.  If someone gets sick (which is unusual) we let time work its wonders before we get too concerned.  A week ago, one of our grandma cows calved and everything went fine for the first day and a half.  Then she came down with milk fever (which needs to be treated right away), so we treated her with a double dose of calcium.  The next day, we treated her again for good measure.  She acted like she was over her milk fever but kept dragging around for a week, so we called the vet.  He diagnosed her as having a bad case of pneumonia which he proceeded to treat.
