Chicks and baby calves are arriving!
Last week we got our first batch of broiler chicks.  They are lively and doing fine.  What a nice addition to the spring season to complement the greening grass and early flowers.  We also had several baby calves born, so will start milking shortly.

Wanted:  Pet groomer
If any of you are pet groomers and would like to trade services, Duke will be needing a hair cut this spring.  We would be happy to barter with you.

Classes for our spring customer appreciation day
Last year, several customers shared classes on cultured dairy products and juicing.  Are you interested in sharing your knowledge with others this year?

Stories from the farm

This week, we spent a day helping the neighbor burn piles of brush left in his pasture last spring after the flood.  We had attempted this several times prior, but had to postpone due to the strong Kansas winds.  Being a fire fighter, Daniel had a blast.

The date is set for our spring party!
May 26, Memorial Day, will be our spring customer appreciation party.  David will have graduated from college and will be home by then, so we will have the whole crew back together.  Put the date on your calender and plan to attend.  More details later.

Beef going fast
We have had lots of interest in beef by the side, and many of you have placed orders.  If you're still thinking about it, think quickly because beef is going fast...

Thank you for sharing with us
We try to keep you up to date on what is happening here on the farm and in our lives, and some of you let us know when you have joys or crisis.  Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives.  We enjoy getting to know you better and sharing with you.

Stories from the farm

David has been taking an upper level math class in college.  One of the assignments was to develop a math model of a project.  David chose to use our chicken enterprise for his project.  It is interesting that after plugging in all the data from our operation such as costs, labor, sales, etc. his model projected exactly what we already know:  It is much more profitable for us to cut up chicken and sell the different pieces than it is to sell the whole chicken.  Convience for the end consumer comes at a price.

Meat prices are more comparable than we thought
We had a new customer this week who told us that she has been purchasing all-grass ground beef at Target for $4.99/lb.  With tax, that comes to $5.36/lb.  I had just finished telling her that we don't try to undercut Walmart because our focus is on quality rather than price.  However, that is getting pretty close to having to eat my own words.

Spring is coming to the farm
This week we spent two days planting clover into wheat on some new land we are renting this year.  The land belongs to my cousin, who is retiring, and is located across the section from us so we can easily walk the cattle back and forth when we will go over there for pasture.  Also this week, Daniel purchased 70 fruit trees to start an orchard.  Yesterday, Kendra brought two friends home and we spent the day planting the new orchard.  Nothing makes a person think of spring more than digging in the dirt.  Hopefully in 2-3 years we will start to have fruit for sale.

Ice cream
We are almost out of our regular ice cream but do have some from an experiment that we tried last summer.  We added a small amount of rum to the ice cream to lower the freezing point in order to keep it a bit softer.  Did it work?  You decide.  It has a slight rum flavor and is labeled "less rum."

Chicken feed
If you are planning on coming to get chicken feed you might send us an email the day before just to let us know so that we can be sure and have enough for you.  In another two weeks we will also have broiler feed available.

Chicken butchering
If you are interested in helping us butcher chickens this summer, please let us know.  We have more people who want to help all the time and we only have a limited space to work in.

Stories from the farm
Last week I shared about a cow giving birth a month early to a stillborn calf.  We are not ready to begin milking, so on Monday I called several people who had expressed interest in a family cow and none were able to take her.  So I called a fellow dairyman and found a newborn Jersey bull that he was willing to sell.  So by noon on Monday we had the cow up at the barn bonding a calf to her.  Cows, like humans, can sense (smell) a different offspring than their own.  Anyway, the calf nursed that noon.  We got the pair together again that evening and then again the next morning after which they ran together.  So we now have a healthy baby calf running around the pasture.

Fillets available
We were restocking the sales room this week and pulled a box of beef out of the freezer that had been behind the milk.  It was dated November 2007.  The really neat thing was that I found a bunch of fillets in there priced at the old price of $16/lb.  The first customer to come by can have them.

New cheese
With our new cheese order this week was a new flavor-- Habanero.  I resisted all this time thinking that it would be to hot to sell but after Jalapeño became our best selling flavor I decided to give it a try.

Stories from the farm
This past Friday, one of our cows gave birth.  This is about a month early and the calf was probably somewhere between 7 and 8 months along out of a 9 month gestation.  It was born dead as it had some genetic defects.  It was sad but we know that nature has a way of taking care of such things.
