Beef by the side
Are you planning to purchase a side of beef this year? If so, please let us know so we can make sure we have enough cattle to provide for
all of our customers. Buying beef by the side (instead of individual cuts) provides quite a cost savings to you! If you have the storage
space, we highly recommend this option.

Sales tickets in the barn
We are starting to have enough customers with the same last name that we would appreciate it if you would put both your first and last name
on the sales tickets. Sometimes we have to guess who gets the credit for the purchase. You wouldn't want someone else to earn Cream of the
Crop status because of your purchases...

Lamb is a great deal!
We periodically review the prices of our products, and this week I discovered that our lamb is undervalued compared to beef and chicken.
So if you are looking for great buys, consider lamb chops or boneless legs.

Stories from the farm
Wow, there is life after long johns and insulated coveralls. I can bend over and touch my toes and I didn't gain as much weight as I
thought I had. Isn't warmer weather a wonderful thing. Just like I know that warm weather is coming I know that Jesus is always with me.
Sometimes I am just to stiff to bow to Him. Aren't life's stories interesting?

Thanks to those who responded to our survey
We appreciate those who responded last week. It allerted us to some misconceptions that are going around.

We produce our own beef along with a cooperative producer. Yoder Meats does not supply us with product nor do we supply them. They only process our beef. The beef they sell is not grass finished and could contain added hormones.

The milk sold at Dillions in glass jars is not raw and is not all grass. It is pasturized and produced by feeding grain and possibly hormones.

Milk purchased from small producers on their farm is raw but probably not all forage based. If that is where you are getting your product, be sure and ask them about their feeding regimen.

Chicken feed
We have been suppling a number of customers with chicken feed. If you are interested, let us know. If you are currently purchasing feed, be sure and check the price on the sales ticket as we are having to raise prices due to the cost of the grain.

Cheese discriptions
We have obtained a description of the different cheeses from our cheese maker. It is posted on the door above the cheese. If you are interested in the decriptions but don't come to the farm, I will gladly email a copy to you.

New-found resourse base-- you!
Thank you all for the many responses to our questions last week regarding new products or services you would like to see. We discovered a wealth of information in our customers that we had not previously tapped. A common request among respondants was for us to sell milk in glass containers. After some research, we have concluded that an investment of $50,000 would be needed to prepare us for bottling, washing/sanitizing, an inventory of jars (costing roughly $5-$6 per gallon jar), and a building to house the process. At this time, this option is cost prohibitive for us. Do you have any other ideas?

Frozen milk
We have had some problems with milk jugs leaking when they start to thaw. We apologize for this. When plastic freezes, it becomes very brittle. As we handle frozen gallons of milk, sometimes they get knocked against each other, causing the plastic to crack unnoticed until the milk begins to thaw.

Until we find a solution, here is the best way to handle a leaking milk jug: Let the jug thaw for an hour or two in the kitchen sink with the leaking side up, then wash it well. Place the jug in a big dishpan. Take a sharp knife and cut the jug around the middle so that you have a top and bottom half. This will allow you to remove the plastic from the frozen milk. Cover the dishpan and let thaw like normal.

New customers
During the last year, approximately 250 new cusotmers purchased something from our store one time and never returned. Are you one of those customers? If so, we'd like your feedback. Were the prices to high? Was the distance from your home too inconvenient? Did the products fail to meet your expectations? Other reasons? We would very much appreciate your input so that we can improve our customer experience. If you send us your input, we will give you a $10 credit the next time you come out. Thanks!

Stories from the farm
Did you know that grocery store food travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your local store? In contrast, the food you purchase from us travels a maximum of ten miles-- five miles to the butcher shop and five miles back. If you purchasse dairy or poultry products, which we handle entirely on the farm, they have gone about 100 feet. Isn't it nice to know how much energy you are saving and how green you are being by supporting your local farmer?

New food for a new year
At JaKo, Inc., we are committed to bringing you the healthiest food products that we can. Are there food items that you would like us to grow/produce that we are not? Would different packages sizes or containers be more appropriate for your needs? Let us know, and we will gladly try to accommodate.

One option we are considering is to freeze milk in cubes (using a former ice machine). If this happens, we would sell milk as bags of "milk cubes" instead of gallons. This would allow you to thaw as many as you like at a time. What do you think?

Pork
We will have pork available until the end of January. We have chosen not to raise pork due to the lack of demand and to instead, focus our resources on other food items.

Stories from the farm
We spent several days this past week picking up branches and triming trees, remanants of the ice storm. It is nice to look out the front window of the house and not see branches laying all around. Daniel also attended a conference on fruit tree production. He plans on planting some trees this spring. Hopefully that will give us fruit for sale in a few years.
