Products taste different
We have customers wonder why products, especially milk, change taste during the year and sometimes think it is spoiled. This is because the grasses change during the year and also the cows are in a different stage of lactation. There is generally nothing wrong with the milk but if you feel there is a problem please let us know and remember that all products are guaranteed.
Store purchased milk always tastes the same because it is produced with grain which is a neutralizer of flavor in milk and meat. The feed ration does not change during the year. Like wise since commercial dairyman are producing year round the cows are in all stages of lactation mitigating the flavors.
Ducks
Several months ago Daniel decided to try his hand at raising Muscovy ducks. He ordered 50 from the hatchery. Wednesday the hatchery called and said they had 47 and if that was enough they would ship them. He agreed and quickly got a brooder ready for them. Late Friday night he got a call from the post office saying his ducks were here. When he went to pick them up he thought that they were really quiet so he opened one corner of the box to look at them. They were all dead. He hopes to try again next spring. Oh the duck shipment was insured so he will not loose his money.
Stories from the farm
Yesterday there was a conference on High Density Stock Grazing in Missouri that Daniel and I wanted to go to. Friday night I got up at midnight and went out to chore. When I finished up at 1:30 I called Daniel and he came down. We left around 2 am with me driving. I drove until I got sleepy then let Daniel drive. We each took several turns until we got to the meeting each getting several naps. We sat in a lecture all morning and then in the afternoon went on a pasture walk. It was very good and we learned a lot about the mistakes we were making and how to improve. At 5:30 Saturday afternoon we started for home with Daniel driving. I slept for about 3 hours and then at midnight when we got home Daniel went home to bed and I went out to chore again. Needless to say the cows were a bit confused about what time we should milk.

Report on the fall party
Thanks to everyone who came to the fall party last evening! Although it was too windy to build a bonfire, we did enjoy a talented steel drum band, shooting eggs toward a target with a three-person slingshot, and nice fellowship with other customers.
A raw-milk success story
We frequently receive notes from our customers that reinforce our belief in the benefits healthy eating. Here's one we received this week from Kelly Zavala of Augusta, KS:
"We have two testimonies to share about raw milk. Our first one is our 6 year old son, Isaiah. Isaiah has psoriasis on his elbows. We would put different things on it, coconut oil, etc, but it didn't make a difference. Then, I read something that milk may be causing it, so we switched him over to rice and almond milk. It worked, but it was difficult, as rice and almond milk are both very expensive... we found out about you and started to buy raw milk... Within 3 days of starting raw milk, his elbows were clear! We recently went on vacation and during that time missed a milk delivery, so we were three weeks without raw milk. Isaiah was almost crying about his elbows and the pain. Again, it only took three days for his elbows to clear up.
"When our almost two year daughter was just over one year old, we found some pretty bad decay just on the front of her two front teeth. We took her to a pediatric dentist, who put some fluoride on it and said, "This won't get rid of it, it will only prevent it from getting worse. This way, we can wait until she is a bit older to work on her teeth." Working on her teeth would involve taking her to the hospital, completely knocking her out and drilling her teeth. All to the tune of approximately $8000... Fast forward to a few months of drinking raw milk, I looked at Ainsley's teeth, and there was definitely hard white material where there had not been weeks ago! In doing some research on the internet, I found that once enamel is gone, it is gone. BUT, there is another layer right below the enamel that is able to regenerate itself. In reading, it said that if you have the right diet (raw, grass fed cow milk being one of the many suggestion...) and keep your teeth clean, the second layer can regenerate itself... God has answered our prayers for Ainsley's teeth to be healed through drinking raw milk and swabbing her teeth with peroxide!"
Stories from the farm
Life on the farm revolves around seasons and weather. Last week, we received about three inches of rain, which created perfect conditions for planting wheat after the ground dried out a bit. We do not plant wheat, but Daniel is working for a farmer who does, and so he has been working long hours to get the wheat in the ground. Last night after the fall party, he went out to the field and planted wheat until 3:45 this morning. They are calling for rain again tonight, increasing the rush to get the wheat planted.

Seating at the fall party
We forgot to mention that it would be helpful if you brought lawn chairs to the fall party. Have your name on them so if you forget to take them home we know where they belong. Also put your name on your snack container for the same reason.
The plan at the party is to have snacks, music and games to keep your interest up all while making and rekindling old friendships..
Today Daniel and I cut up the wings from about 180 chickens and tonight Judy is marinating them. My taste buds are already starting to water and that is after a grand dinner of pork roast and cabbage. Speaking of pork we are about out and will be removing the last of it from the sales room the first of November so if you want any stock up soon.

Don't miss out on hot wings and steel drum music!
Those are two of the great things you'll experience this Saturday at our fall party! This week, we've experimented with several recipes for seasoning our chicken wings and we have settled on three to share with you. So come out at 6:30, bring a healthy snack to share and anticipate a great evening to enjoy fall in the country! Also, bring copies of your recipe if you're able. Many customers like to take home recipes from the snacks they've sampled during the evening.
Last lamb butchering
Tuesday the last of this year's lambs go to the butcher. If you are interested in purchasing a side of lamb let us know soon. Lamb has really become a big hit and we are selling many more sides than in the past years. Because of their high demand, don't wait too long or we may be out!
As a side note, this past week I (Ken) did price comparisons of our products at Walmart, Dillons, and Whole Foods. Lamb was not available at any of those stores. Interesting...

Fall party is coming soon...
We are getting very excited about our fall customer party on October 20 starting at 6:30. Here's a sneak peak: bonfire, roasting marshmallows, a steel drum band, and healthy snacks brought by all! It's a night you and your family won't want to miss! Come to the farm for a great time of celebrating the fall season and sharing ideas with other like-minded folks.
Everyone is invited to bring a healthy snack to share. We will provide drinks and hot wings.
Honey
We are almost out of honey from last year, but my supplier from Newton tells me that he is almost ready to bring this year's crop. He has told me that the price will be higher simply because so many bees died off this year and there is less honey.
Summer intern
Kaydee Welchons has been here all summer helping us and learning all about farm life. From snow storms to floods to droughts to hot weather and cold she has seen and learned many things. She learned fast and worked efficiently. We have enjoyed her presence and will miss her as she goes back to San Diego this week. Kaydee, may our Lord bless you as you continue on your journey of life. Thank you.
Stories from the farm
Last week our family spent Sunday thru Wednesday in New Haven, MO celebrating Judy's sister and brother-in-law's birthdays. More family from northern Indiana and Colorado met up with us there. We had a great time relaxing and getting caught up on each others lives again. Kaydee did a great job of taking care of the farm but alas no one found time to send out Farm Fresh Weekly.
