Fall party is coming soon...
We are getting very excited about our fall customer party on October 20 starting at 6:30. Here's a sneak peak: bonfire, roasting marshmallows, a steel drum band, and healthy snacks brought by all! It's a night you and your family won't want to miss! Come to the farm for a great time of celebrating the fall season and sharing ideas with other like-minded folks.
Stories from the farm
As predicted, we collapsed Daniel's barn this week and burned it on one wind still evening. It was a sight that a person doesn't see many times in their lifetime-- a big backhoe pushing in all sides of a barn, followed by the whole thing going up in flames against the night sky. As the fire died down, Daniel even roasted a marshmallow on the largest bonfire ever. Duke was very intimidated by the fire and decided he didn't like roasted marshmallows.

Sales room tickets
As we gain more customers, we have more people with the same names. Please remember to put both your first and last name on the ticket. Thanks!
The changing seasons...
As seasons come and go, our lives change as well. With cooler weather, production drops so our time spent processing milk takes less time. We have been busy rebuilding some fences and are getting ready to install more water lines to the paddocks to better meet the livestock's needs. Also, with the weather cooling down we notice a change in the grasses. The summer grasses are looking dried dormant but the brome and fescue are coming on strong. Ah, for a nice autumn season.

This summer we have had an abundance of spiders and toads. It seems like all we do some days is sweep up after the toads (you can't keep them out of the barn) and sweep down spider webs. I will enjoy cooler weather if for nothing more than not having to do this. But on the bright side of things, we didn't have many flies and mosquitoes this summer.

Stories from the farm
This past week Daniel has been working around his place. We have decided to take down the barn at his house before it falls down. Shingles have been blowing off every time we have a wind and the only thing that keeps the barn from falling down are the trees growing up in it. Monday we plan on collapsing it and then when the weather conditions are right have, burn it in a big bonfire.

Road now open
After many months of patience, our road is now open to the west. It's been quite a fascinating process watching them fill in the huge cavity first with sand from the fields, then rock, and more gravel. We're very thankful that we can once again use that road.

Experiences with high density stock grazing
We are learning a lot about forages, cattle, grazing time distributions, and more. Since we can measure how much milk production we get every day and relate it to how and what the cows are grazing, the learning curve is fast and steep. A decrease in production from about 500lbs of milk per day to 300lbs per day caused us to make some drastic changes. We are currently back up to around 400lbs/day.

New forages planted
We planted new pasture forage this week in about 30 acres and an oat/rye mixture on 17 acres for winter pasture. This is all part of the pasture renovation that we have been trying to do since we put the irrigation system in last year. Where the new grass gets watered, it is coming up. These new grasses will help enrich the nutrient content of our pastures and provide better grazing for all animals.

Stories from the farm
Last week, we recounted some machinery that had broken. This week I (Ken) went to use the chain saw and the rope would not pull. I thought that it was unusual, since we had just used it and it ran fine. I took the spark plug out and the rope pulled fine except that I got sprayed with bar oil out of the plug hole. Interesting I thought, that there was bar oil in the cylinder. I drained it all out, put the plug back in and tried to start it. The saw spit and sputtered all the while belching blue smoke. I finally gave up, set the saw on the work bench and did some other things. When I came back there was a big pool of oil under the saw which had leaked out of the muffler. I ask around and all the people in the know said that it was not a good sign for the saw. Since it is about 30 years old we decided not to take it in to get fixed since it also had other problems. We called another neighbor and borrowed his saw for the day.

The saw was sitting on the bench and Kaydee ask what we were going to do with it. I said that we would just trash it and get another. She ask if she could take it apart to see how it was made and to learn how it operated. I said sure, and told her that when she found the part that I thought was the problem I would like to look at it. Kaydee great fun all afternoon and I learned that it was probably just an o-ring that was leaking.

Products for winter needs
We are presently trying to figure out how much of each product we need to meet the needs of our customers this winter. That is a real guessing game! If you think that your purchasing patterns will change much in the next 6-8 months please let us know so that we can take that into account.
New products
If there is a product that you would like that we would be capable of producing, let us know and we'll consider it. Daniel is exploring the option of raising Muscovy ducks. This is a breed that does not need water, are very good foragers and like to pick flies off cattle as well. They are a great tasting meat bird.. Some graziers have said they work very well with their cattle operation.
Fall party
We are getting very excited about our fall customer party on October 20! Reserve that evening to come to the farm for a great time of celebrating and sharing ideas with other like-minded folks.
Stories from the farm
Its great to have good neighbors. Four weeks ago our lawn mower died. We took it to the repair shop and was told that it would be fixed in two weeks. Four weeks later, it was back home, but during that time we had to borrow the neighbor's mower twice. Then two weeks ago, our tractor died. We called the dealership and they said that they could get it in the end of the week. It is still here. They haven't even come to get it to fix it yet. So we borrowed the neighbor's tractor. We appreciate our great neighbors like we do our great customers. God does really bless in many ways.
