Eggs by the case
Due to lack of cartons, we have eggs available by the case (a case contains 15 dozen). Each case is priced at $31.50, which gives you a dozen free eggs. Also, do you have any extra egg cartons laying around?
High density stock grazing
As a result of last week's conference that I (Ken) attended, we have begun to graze our cattle on much smaller plots of land for short time periods. This helps to graze the pasture more evenly and tramples the weeds more effectively. For those of you who want numbers, we're grazing about 50 head of cattle on 1/10th of an acre for three hours before moving them to the next patch.
Lambs to the butcher
Seven lambs will go to the butcher this Tuesday. Most of those have been spoken for, but if you would like a side, let us know.
Stories from the farm
This week, we intended to group all of our cattle together for our high density stock grazing. We had just purchased nine head of beef cattle from a neighbor, who were not used to being handled and moved as much as our cattle. When we attempted to move them, four of them spooked and took off running. We found them a day later along the river. To calm them down and ease their movements, we took a bunch of our calm cattle to them and left them together for a day. When we went back the next day to move them all, the calm cattle surrounded the spooked cattle and kept them in line with nudges and prods to get them to the correct pasture. We have smart cows!

Farm Fresh Weekly

Editorial correction
Last week in "Stories from the farm" we talked about healthy food and ended with the line "When people tell me that they cannot afford our food, my response (with more emphasis all the time) is that you cannot afford to eat healthy quality food!"  We missed inserting the word "not" after the word "afford."  What we meant to say is you cannot afford not to eat healthy quality food!  After that was sent,, I had several people tell me they discovered they are saving money eating our food because they do not eat as much due to the nutrient density.  They also said that they have more energy and feel better.  Three cheers for healthy food and happy customers!

Chickens and feed
Recently, a customer who had purchased four layer chickens from a supply house was asking where to get organic feed.  Daniel has agreed to sell both organic feed and small numbers of layers to persons who would like to start their own backyard flock.  Call ahead if you want either, so we can have them ready for you.

Stewing chickens
The last time we butchered chickens, we processed 25 young roosters that were extras from the laying flock.  These are not considered meat birds, but we were amazed at the amount of meat they provided.  They have a great deal of  flavor and a little more texture than the fryers do, so we suggest cooking them in the crock pot with a little seasoning.  What  great flavor!  These are the kind of birds grandma was familiar with, and now they are available to you in the sales room!

Stories from the farm
I (Ken) went to a grazing conference this past week.  Wow, I got pumped up to make some changes in our operation that I think will greatly improve our productivity, enhance even further the animal well-being and decrease our labor input.  I was also reminded by several people at the conference, that we have the best customer base and marketing system of anyone around.  A big thank you to each of you!

Farm Fresh Weekly
Fresh lamb
We brought lamb home from the butcher this week; so we now have leg, shoulder roasts and racks available. Help your self and enjoy!
Technology loss
This past week our internet service was down for several days. We did miss the ease of email and the internet, but in another way it was sort of nice to be more laid back. That is the reason this Farm Fresh Weekly is late.
Produce
We have regular and roman tomatoes available this week, as well as sweet, banana, and jalapeno peppers.
Stories from the farm
In the current issue of "Ode" magazine that we received this week, is an article about healthy nutrition and feeding your brain. They sighted studies done in prisons where inmates were given fish oil to increase the omega 3 fatty acids. After being on these supplements for a period of time, minor infractions decreased by 26% and major infractions by 37%. Next, they did the study in schools. After 3 months of supplements, the children did substantially better than those in the control group. To read the complete article, pick up the magazine on the shelf in the sales room.
When people tell me that they cannot afford our food, my response (with more emphasis all the time) is that you can not afford to eat healthy quality food!

Stories from the farm
We have been working ground in anticipation of planting perennial pasture and also annual forages for feed this fall. This is a way to rejuvenate our pastures so we have a better diet for our cattle. We try and treat them the same way we treat our customers by providing them with the best food possible.
