Farm Fresh Weekly
Spring party a success!
Thanks to everyone who came to the farm last Saturday for our spring customer appreciation day! About 200 people attended, and despite the strong winds, it was an enjoyable day for all. Some highlights included: presentations by Dana Solomon and Linda Dietz on juicing and fermented dairy products, a delicious carry-in meal, and chasing chickens (for the kids)! If you weren't able to make it, watch for our next event in the fall.

Milk tasting
Some customers bought milk early this spring and didn't like the taste. Early spring milk does have a very distinct taste because the cows have just given birth and the milk is very nutrient-rich. However, that distinct taste is mostly gone, and the milk now has a more "normal" flavor. For those customers who would like to taste the milk before they purchase it, there is a half gallon of milk in the fridge door with cups for tasting. Enjoy!

Taking orders for sides of beef
We are now taking orders for sides of beef for this summer. These tend to go fairly quickly, so let us know what you would like! Buying by the side is a great way to save money if you eat very much beef.

This week's cold weather
This past week's weather took us by surprise!  We were hit with six inches of heavy, wet snow and rain.  We lost two baby calves from the weather, and it made choring quite difficult.  However, we are extremely grateful that we are grass farmers rather than crop farmers, because grass is resilient in inclement weather, while severe weather can kill crops.

Happy Easter!
Today, we celebrate Christ's resurrection. During the sermon in church, we watched a video clip that summarized major religions: Budda came to teach inner peace and promised reincarnation. He died, and his tomb is still occupied. Mohammed came proclaiming himself the last prophet of God. He died, and his tomb is still occupied. Christ came to bring us life, to teach us love for each other, and to create a way for us to have a personal relationship with God. He died, and his tomb is empty. Today is truly a day to celebrate!
Fresh cream and yogurt available
We are producing enough milk to now have fresh cream and yogurt available. The cream is in the refrigerator with the fresh milk, and the yogurt--both plain and vanilla--is in the top shelf of the cheese refrigerator. Also, frozen skim milk from this season is now available next to the colostrum and buttermilk. Enjoy!
Frozen apple blossoms
We received an email from the owners of the apple orchard this week saying that they doubt that the apple crop will survive the freezing temperatures we had. They said that it was a waiting game now. We will keep you informed.
Chickens learning the ropes
Daniel collected his first pullet egg this week! Pullet eggs are the first eggs layed by chickens. They are much smaller than normal eggs, and sometimes have soft shell instead of a hard eggshell. Our chickens are growing up...
(We became aware that not everyone received FFW last week. In case you didn't receive it, below is the newest information about our spring party:)
Customer appreciation spring party
We hope you're planning to come to our spring farm tour and party on Saturday, April 21. You're invited to come as early as 9:30 and stay through the chicken barbeque lunch. We have three classes scheduled. At 11:00, Dana Solomon will give a presentation on juicing, Linda Dietz will give a presentation on making fermented dairy products at 12:00 noon, and Bart Hinkle will speak on NAIS (National Animal Identification System) at 1:00 pm. In addition, we'll give farm tours on the hay wagon, you can hold a baby chick, and purchase products from the sales room.
To help us plan for the chicken barbecue, please let us know how many people you will be bringing for the meal. We don't need an exact count and we won't turn anyone away, but it would be helpful to have a rough estimate of how many to grill for. Feel free to bring a friend to the dinner! We're always excited to meet new friends who value quality foods. By customer request, we invite you to contribute to the lunch by bringing a healthy salad, vegetable, or dessert. You may also wish to bring lawn chairs or yard blankets. We will furnish plates, plastic ware, drinks, and barbeque chicken.

Fresh milk is available!
Last week, Daniel's lambs arrived and he is getting his second batch of chicks this week, Those are some of the joys of spring! We are also milking six cows now, but that number changes daily. Today we had three baby calves! Fresh milk is available in the sales room for $5.00/gallon. Like every spring when we start milking, the milk has a lot more good grass flavor than later season production. We also have colostrum frozen in 1/2 gallon containers for $7.00 each.

March showers brings on the grass!
We enjoyed approximately 3 inches of gentle rain this week ... and so did the cows! Some of you may have experienced muddy roads when you came to the farm, but as soon as the sun comes out, the grass really grows and the puddles disappear. So don't let a little rain stop you from venturing to the country!

Buying Clubs
For the benefit of those who don't receive our weekly e-mail (and are receiving this newsletter by mail), we would like to tell you about our buying clubs: A buying club (usually defined geographically) simply pools their orders, and either we deliver multiple orders to a single location, or someone from that group comes to the farm to pick up the orders. We have groups in northwest Wichita, east Wichita, Derby, and are trying to start one in El Dorado. If you have interest in joining one of these buying clubs, please contact us.
