Customer appreciation spring party
Plans are coming together for our spring farm tour and party April 21.  We have scheduled three classes on juicing, making fermented dairy products, and another that will be announced later.  We have had a lot of interest from customers and are even getting calls from other people who have heard about it and want to come.

To help us plan for the chicken barbecue, please let us know how many people you will be bringing for the meal.  We don't need an exact count and we won't turn anyone away, but it would be helpful to have a rough estimate of how many to grill for.  (We are still looking for someone to head up the grilling.  Is that person you?)

Fresh milk is available!
Fresh milk is available in the sales room for $5.00/gallon.  Supply is limited, but is increasing quickly.  Like every spring when we start milking, the milk has a lot more good grass flavor than later season production.  We will also have colostrum frozen in 1/2 gallon containers for $7.00 each.

Apple orchard
We were approached this week by an older gentleman who has a small apple orchard that hasn't been maintained for the past several years due to his ailing health.  He wondered if we would be interested in working the orchard and selling the apples, which have not been sprayed for many years.  It sounds like an interesting challenge.  I do not know what the apples would be like this year, but if enough of you are interested, we will consider his offer.  Please let us know-- would you be interested in purchasing organic apples?  Varieties include red and golden delicious, jonathan, and a few others.

Lambs came this week
Daniel purchased 30 hair lambs this week from a good friend, Kim Barker.  We unloaded them out in the pasture where they started to graze.  Every thing went well until the next morning, when we discovered they were not in our pasture.  The hoof prints indicated that they had been spooked and took off running during the night.  We tracked them down and found 20 about three miles from home.  After walking those home, we went looking for the rest.  While we were driving around, we met a neighbor who had 10 extra lambs in his flock and was out trying to find out were they came from, since he thought that he had the only sheep in the neighborhood.  He had penned the extra 10 in a corral, so we loaded them up in the trailer and carried them home.  Typical experiences make great stories for grandkids some day.

Last season's chickens on sale
We're trying to clear out last season's frozen chicken inventory to make room for fresh chicken this spring.  While supply lasts, all chicken products will be 10% off.  There is no sign in the sales room indicating this sale, so don't forget about it and figure your bill accordingly.

Baby chicks have arrived!
On Tuesday, the first batch of 400 baby chicks arrived on the farm!  These chicks come in boxes by US Mail.  When they arrive at the Hutchinson Post Office, post office workers call Daniel, who drives into town to receive these cheeping boxes.  He brings them to the farm, unloads them in the warm brooder house, and dips each chick's beak in water to teach them where it is.

The chicks are shipped the day they hatch and arrive on our farm two days later.  They have eaten nothing since hatching and are very hungry and thirsty!

First baby calves born, too...
We had two baby calves born this week... one stillborn, and the other alive and healthy.  This took our winter cattle caretaker by surprise, so by Saturday, he had brought the whole group of cattle back to our farm.  I guess it's time to start milking... Fresh milk should be available in limited supply next week.  Frozen colostrum is already available in the sales room.

Spring day on the farm!
During these winter months, many of you have refrained from bringing us new customers because of our limited product supply.  We are happy to inform you that this spring, we will be producing enough healthy food for you AND your friends!  Our spring day on the farm is a celebration of another growing season, and a perfect chance to bring your friends and introduce them to us and our products.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 21, 2007.  We will have the usual farm tour to see the animals, pet the chicks, etc. with a chicken barbecue for lunch.  Barbecued chicken, drinks, and table service will be provided... bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share and bring a friend!  We're still looking for someone to head up the grilling process.  Contact us if you're interested.

Chickens and water don't mix
On Thursday, Daniel did some work on his chicken pen before leaving for Kansas City for the weekend to be re-certified in a high-ropes challenge course.  Friday morning, I (Ken) went out to open the pen door to let the chickens out, and discovered that the entire pen was underwater.  Wet chickens came running out and unfortunately, 33 perished.  Somehow during the night, they had dislodged a plug in the end of their water pipe, which flooded the pen.

Derby buying club
Linda Deitz has organized a buying club from the Derby area.  Linda comes to the farm approximately every three weeks to pick up product for her club members.  Contact her at lindadhd@sbcglobal.net if you're interested.

Spring day on the farm!
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 21, 2007.  We will have the usual farm tour to see the animals, pet the chicks, etc. with a chicken barbecue for lunch.  Per customers' request, the lunch will be a carry-in.  Barbecued chicken, drinks, and table service will be provided... bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share!

Are you interested in organizing the grilling process?  Since we like to be mingling with customers and friends and giving farm tours, we are looking for someone to handle this part of the meal.  The task would entail grilling enough chicken for 100+ people.  Please let us know if you're interested!

Spring is coming...
We had wonderful spring weather this past week.  It really puts us in the mood for new chicks, baby calves and new lambs.  It is amazing what a little warm weather will do.  The first set of broiler chicks are set to arrive in two weeks.  That will put the first butchering around the May 21.  If you want fresh chicken get your order in soon.

Summer intern
Kaydee Welchons will join us as an intern this summer.  Kaydee is from San Marcos, CA, and will arrive the first of April.  Welcome aboard, Kaydee!

El Dorado buying club
Brenda Blowers in El Dorado is organizing a buying club for customers in her area.  Contact Brenda if you are interested at:  peanut1521@cox.net
