Egg production slowing down
Due to short day length and cooler weather, our chickens have slowed their egg production.  Our other supplier called this week and said that his chickens have started to molt (a rest period before they start production again) and his young chickens have not started to lay yet.  We plan on getting eggs from a producer in Iowa to carry us though, but transportation is not available for two weeks.  Please be patient with us!

Christmas cheer
Wow, you all are taking good advantage of our Christmas offer!  As our Christmas present to our customers, this year we are going to donate 10% of sales receipts from November 15 to December 1 to our local soup kitchen in Hutchinson.  And so far, we've had quite a lot to donate!  Thanks for helping us support local charities.

In keeping with our love of healthy food products we will be donating food and not money.

Wichita buying club delivery
The Wichita buying club will be getting a delivery this Wednesday.  If you want to pick up your product in east Wichita, contact Dana Solomon at dndsolomon@hotmail.com.

Stories from the farm
In the fall, we lease our farm land to a friend who bow hunts turkey and deer.  This past week, he harvested a large buck.  He almost didn't get the shot because the buck and doe were running around under his tree so quickly (it's mating season) and it was hard to get a good shot.  But he got the buck and is very happy about it.  For the rest of the season, he mounted a motion-activated movie camera in his tree stand so he can continue to view the action even when he can not be in the stand enjoying the peace and quietness that our farm affords.

It's the end of production season...
As many of you know, we operate a seasonal dairy.  This means that we only milk our cows from spring to fall.  We are nearing the time when we will stop milking (probably around the first to middle December).  As we near this time, we stockpile milk, which we freeze, to carry our customers through the winter.  In the past few months, our milk sales have dramatically increased, making it difficult for us to freeze as much milk for your winter needs.  Consequently, we ask that until we start milking again next spring you refrain from referring new customers to us.  (We hesitate to say this, because customers are our lifeline; however, we also want to respect your needs for milk).  If you have a better solution to this problem, please let us know.

Our recipes are available on the web!
Many of you have requested recipes from us at one time or another.  We've listened to your requests, and now have recipes available at  www.jakoinc.com/recipes.shtml .  Several of these recipes were served to our "Cream of the Crop club" customers at the fall party, and received rave reviews.  If you want to submit a recipe that uses our products, click on the link at the bottom of page.

Stories from the farm
This week I was doing some yard work when a neighbor stopped in to chat.  He said that he was  finished with harvest and wheat planting and felt like he had time to stop and talk.  I felt kind of sorry for him since one of my joys is stopping to talk to a customer or neighbor.  Thanks for all you do in making this operation successful-- from your encouragement to bagging your own products.  It make my life more fun.

New Products
This week we brought home the pigs we had butchered.  Daniel raised about half the number this year as last but came home with about the same amount of meat.  He must have fed them more.  So we have fresh pork including fresh pork side (uncured bacon).  Last year we sold out within the first month, so if you want some, come quickly.

We also have a new beef product.  Stew meat was requested by several customers so we now have some.  Stew meat is taken from a roast and cut into 1" cubes.  It is like our canned beef only uncooked.  It goes great in a pot of soup that you want to simmer all day.

New web page
David is busy creating a new web page for recipes.  We have had lots of requests for our recipes and cooking tips for our products, so decided to put them on the web.  If you have favorite recipes or helpful suggestions about how to handle our products please send them to us.  We will let you know when this page is up and running.

Stories from the farm
Yesterday our neighbor walked his cattle past our place to some milo stubble to graze.  They were using a pickup, a car and two guys on horses.  It was quite a rodeo when they came to an open gate into our farm and the cattle turned in and were not supposed to.  Daniel and I were in the house watching and laughing.  For us moving cattle is a very calm process.  We lead them where we want to take them.  Maybe it helps to think like a cow.

Our fall customer appreciation party was a success!
Wow, it is fun to share a fall evening with friends and customers!  We had a great party last night and if you were here, you know what I mean.  If you could not make it, I sure hope for your sake that we have another one next year.  Well, for my sake I hope so too.  Thanks to everyone who came and brought delicious snacks!

Feed situation
With the dry summer and fall, our grass that feeds the cows during the winter has not grown.  To take care of the situation, we considered purchasing hay, but found it too expensive.  After prayer and much looking, we found a friend and cattleman in St. John, KS who has plenty of pasture and has agreed to take our cows and heifers for the winter.  The bulls will be going to another neighbor, so the only animals on the farm this winter will be the calves that were born last spring.  We have plenty of feed for them.  The Lord does work in wondrous ways.

Nourishing Traditions Class
Linda Dietz is teaching a class on cultured dairy products November 13th in Derby.  For more information, contact her at lindadhd@sbcglobal.net.

Stories from the farm
Last night on the hayrack ride, Daniel drove through the pasture that the pigs were in.  Now, the sound of the tractor is the dinner bell for the pigs.  So when he drove through their pen they all came running and followed the trailers.  The children had great fun watching, taunting and being afraid they would be the pigs' lunch.  All arrived safely back.
