Exploring irrigation to increase yield
As many of you know, the demand for our products is rapidly increasing.  We are brainstorming ways to increase production to meet demand since we are currently maximizing production on the land we own.
One way to increase yield from our land is through irrigation.  Irrigating the pastures would stabilize production and lengthen the growing season.  This is especially important right now, since we haven't had rain since the middle of last August.

If we choose to go this route, installing a used irrigation system would cost between $40,000-50,000.  In the past, we have always tried  to finance our improvements through cash flow.  However, this project is larger than what our cash flow allows.  We can borrow money at the bank, but we want to give our customers the opportunity to help us.  If several customers are interested in loaning us capital, we are open to discussing the terms.  If interested, please contact us within the next two weeks.

With or without irrigation, we will continue to maintain our "organic mode" and refrain from using chemical fertilizers and pesticides to grow our forages.

One intern hired, a second in the works
We have recently hired Alaina Smith from Hutchinson as a part-time intern for the 2006 growing season. Alaina is interested in mission work and wants to learn about self-sufficiency in food production. Many of you might know Alaina as the person who took care of our farm while we were in Germany.

We have interviewed several other potential interns and hope to hire another person within the next few weeks.

Beef orders
If you are interested in purchasing a side of beef this spring, the earlier you get your order in the more it would help us plan. We think we have enough cattle that will be ready to butcher but with the demand growing fast we would like to be prepared.

Bathroom now available
We will finish the kitchen and bathroom this week. These are located right behind the sales room. If you need to use the restroom while you are here, feel free to do so. We hope to start construction on bedrooms for the interns in the next few weeks.
